Film on Pen Mar Park in the works

CASCADE - A local production company has begun filming for a documentary about Pen Mar Park, a tourist attraction in Cascade that attracted thousands of visitors each weekend between 1877 and 1942, project staff said.

The documentary is being produced by Historical Entertainment LLC, a Cascade-based company that provides re-enactors, costumes, props and other services for historical films. Frank and Susanne Woodring, who publish Maryland Cracker Barrel magazine and wrote the 2005 book Pen Mar for Arcadia Publishing, will serve as historical advisors for the project.

"It's unbelievable how many people remember the park," Frank Woodring said in a press release about the project. "It was an outing everybody looked forward to, and it holds many wonderful memories for many, many senior citizens."

The documentary will include interviews with former patrons and employees of Pen Mar Park, which attracted 10,000 to 15,000 visitors each weekend for spectacular views, dancing, amusement park rides and other attractions. The park closed in 1942, but was reopened in 1977 as a Washington County park with picnic tables, playground equipment and a dance pavilion.

Historical Entertainment is seeking personal narratives or memories of the park, photographs, vintage film footage and mementos, producers said. The company is also offering unpaid internships to help with the project and welcomes financial support.

The documentary will be for sale on DVD, with proceeds expected to benefit Blue Ridge Summit Free Library, production staff said.

Anyone interested in contributing to the project may contact Historical Entertainment at 877-HE4-FILM.
