William E. Nuckols

MT. AIRY, Md. - William Edwin "Fuzzy" Nuckols, 67, of Circle Drive, and formerly of Homestead, Fla., died Monday, March 15, 1999, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 3, 1932, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late William Edwin Sr. and Jessie Estell Rose Nuckols.

Prior to retirement, he was owner/operator of a restaurant in Homestead.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was a member of American Legion, Williamsport and Rockville, Md., and Moose Lodge, Rockville.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 20 years, Nancy Forshey Nuckols; seven daughters, Sharon Cox of Martinsburg, W.Va., Cathy Harris and Teresa Gregory, both of Inwood, W.Va., Linda Taylor of Homestead, Susan Barnhouse and Deborah Parsons, both of Point of Rocks, Md., and Christine Hardesty; two sons, Alan Slifer of Virgina Beach, Va., and Robert Slifer of Lovetsville, Va.; one brother, Earl Warren Nuckols; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by an infant son.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. The Rev. Norman Kimmerer will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Jose M. Rosario

Jose M. Rosario, 61, of 110 East Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Dec. 14, 1937, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Juan and Celestina Rodriguez Rosario.

He was employed by M. V. Construction Co. of Gaithersburg, Md.

He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Hopkins Rosario; one daughter, Amelia Rosario, at home; four sons, Johnny Rosario, Jose Rosario, and Antoina Rosario, all of Hagerstown, and Kevin Rosario of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Maria L. Martinez of Puerto Rico, Luzmario Rosario of Philadelphia, and Maria Estell Rosario of Newark, N.J.; five brothers, Rafael Rosario, Roberto Rosario, Pedro Rosario, and Carmelo Rosario, all of Newark, and Opiano Rosario of Hoboken, N.J.; and eight grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. George Limmer will be celebrant.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, where prayers will be offered at 4:30 p.m.

Veronica J. Stotelmyer

SMITHSBURG - Veronica Jean Sier Stotelmyer, 45, of 12141 Itnyre Road, Smithsburg, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at her home.

Born Oct. 29, 1953, in Frederick, Md., she was the daughter of Richard D. DeLauter of Myersville, Md., and the late Dolores A. Brown DeLauter.

She was a 1971 graduate of Middletown High School, Middletown, Md.

She was employed by First Data Merchant Services.

She bowled in several leagues and was a member of the Pro Bowling Tour. She was listed in the top 20 bowlers for several years.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Rick L. Stotelmyer, at home; one daughter, Nicole R. Sier of Smithsburg; two sons, Michael S. Shifler of Cascade, and Dustin W. Sier of Smithsburg; one stepson, Scott A. Stotelmyer of Hagerstown; two sisters, Deborah A. Kline and Irene M. Lewis, both of Myersville; two brothers, Anthony D. DeLauter and Harry J. DeLauter, both of Myersville; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1332 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Revs. Allan F. Weatherholt Jr. and Steven L. McCarty will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Maudie L. Shank

Maudie Lee "Connie" Shank, 71, of 1400 Outer Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born June 30, 1927, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of the late Walter H. and Emma C. Triplett Conrad.

She was a former employee of Vitro Laboratories, Silver Spring, Md.

She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, and a former member of First Christian Church.

She was a member of Haven Road Senior Citizens Club and Pioneer Partner with Telephone Pioneers.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Ronald E. Shank; two sisters, Betty Ann Carroll of South Point, Ohio, and Emma Jane Cline of Williamsport; one brother, Berkley H. Conrad of Hagerstown; four nieces and seven nephews.

Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line, Pa. The Rev. Lauren Heather Lay will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1332 Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown.

Alverta B. Fierro

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Alverta Beard Fierro, 94, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Jan. 13, 1905, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late George T. and Mattie E. Hines Beard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fierro Sr., in 1959.

She was a partner with her husband in Robert Fierro Co. Inc., until his death.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Norma Fierro Sutherland, at home; one son, Robert Fierro Jr. of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, Ruth Slinghuff, Estie King, Nellie Fellers Gano, Mildred Embrey, Margaret Powell Sturm and May Whitelock; and five brothers, Clarence Beard, Philip Beard, George Beard, Julian Beard, and Charles Beard.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate.

Robert M. Bugosh

WILLIAMSPORT - Robert "Bob" Merritt Bugosh, 55, of 12021 Kemps Mill Road, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at his home.

Born May 27, 1943, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Emil and Helen Hreha Bugosh.

He was a graduate of Strayer College and the University of Baltimore.

He was employed as sales manager by WYII Radio for more than 21 years. He was a morning announcer for WJEJ Radio from 1969 to 1976.

He was a member of Berkeley County Isaak Walton League of America, Williamsport Redmen, Williamsport Moose and a former member of Williamsport Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Campbell Bugosh; and one son, Christopher M. Rummell of Elkridge, Md.

Services will be Thursday at 9 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Brian Leiter will officiate. Burial will be in Colombia Gardens in Arlington, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Richard W. Harbaugh

SMITHSBURG - Richard Wayne "Ricky" Harbaugh, 17, of West Water Street, died Saturday, March 13, 1999.

Born Aug. 27, 1981, in Silver Spring, Md., he was the son of Harold Wayne "Buddy" and Teresa Lee "Terry" Harbaugh of Smithsburg.

He attended Smithsburg High School.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Kristen Lee Harbaugh of Smithsburg; one brother, Brian Allen Harbaugh of Smithsburg; grandparents, Donald and Helen Estep of Stephenson, Va., and Ray and Carrie Wagner of Beltsville, Md.; great-grandparents Nora Fleshman of Beltsville and Marie Bostian of Creagerstown, Md.; and aunts and uncles.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. The Rev. Pat Malone will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

Matilda L. Bumbaugh

QUINCY, Pa. - Matilda L. Minnich Bumbaugh, 86, of Quincy United Methodist Nursing Home, and formerly of 21 Mount Vernon Terrace, Waynesboro, Pa., died Monday, March 15, 1999, in the nursing home.

Born Sept. 17, 1912, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Earla Mae Muth Minnich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Bumbaugh, in 1963. They were married in 1935.

She was a 1930 graduate of Waynesboro High School and a 1931 graduate of Waynesboro Business College.

She was employed as a nurse's assistant at Quincy United Methodist Home, retiring in 1975. She previously was employed in the ticket office of Waynesboro Knitting Mill.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

She was a member of Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, National AARP and North Chapter of AARP 739.

She is survived by a son, J. Gary Bumbaugh of Carlisle, Pa.; two sisters, Eleanor M. Benchoff and Delores J. Carson, both of Waynesboro; three brothers, Emory C. Minnich, Donald C. Minnich, and Reginald R. Minnich, all of Waynesboro; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Cosette A. Markell

Cosette Ailene Markell, 73, of 923 Mount Aetna Road, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born April 18, 1925, in Sharon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late J. Atlee and Edith A. Potter Young.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Markell, in 1985.

She retired from Colton Villa Nursing Home in 1987. Before that she was employed by W.F. Prior Medical Publishing Co.

She was a member of Christ's Reformed Church, was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member.

She was a member of AARP and a former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She is survived by one daughter, Cassandra Wagaman of Hagerstown; three sons, Bruce Markell of Williamsport, Michael Markell of Randallstown, Md., and Wade Markell of Hagerstown; one brother, Dr. Richard P. Young of Williamsport; and five grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro, Pa.

Richard H. Sprenkle

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Richard H. Sprenkle, 77, of 144 N. Church St., died Monday, March 15, 1999, at his home.

Born Dec. 21, 1921, in Roadside, Washington Township, he was the son of the late Merle H. and Blanche Miner Sprenkle.

He was a 1941 graduate of Waynesboro High School and a 1942 graduate of Airplane Inspection School, Baltimore.

He was retired in 1974 from the U.S. government at Fairchild Aircraft, Hagerstown, after 33 years as an inspector.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.

He was past commander and member of VFW Post 695, Waynesboro; Acacia Lodge 586, Zembo Temple; Waynesboro Shrine Club, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Harrisburg Consistory and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Yaukey Sprenkle, whom he married in 1947; three daughters, Constance M. Turner of Falling Waters, W.Va., Dr. Barbara Jo Ann Seabrook of Fenwick Island, Del., and Vicki Ellen Wile of Thomasville, Pa; one son, Gregory Richard Sprenkle of Hagerstown; two sisters, Martha Hartman and Emma Feaster, both of Waynesboro; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; a sister Evelyn Royer, and a brother, Merle Sprenkle Jr.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Jay E. Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

STEPHENS CITY, Va. - June A. "Junebug" Conco, 81, of Stephens City, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Monday, March 15, 1999, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born May 11, 1917, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Anna Frankenberry Mills.

She previously was employed at Carroll Electronics, Interwoven Mills and Aikens Steak House.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She was a member of Women of the Moose and Women's Auxiliary of the VFW, Eagles and American Legion.

She is survived by two daughters, Cathy Palmer of Stephens City, with whom she resided, and Cindy Bailey of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; one sister, Ruth Snell of Baltimore; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Jane Elizabeth Griffin, Winifred Russler and Margaret Mong.

Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Steven J. Jenks will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Elva E. Gabler

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Elva E. Gabler, 93, of Menno Haven, and formerly of 1801 Alexander Ave., died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Menno Haven.

Born Sept. 2, 1905, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Bertha Jacoby Keller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnet A. Gabler, in 1985.

She was employed at J. Schoeneman Co. and the Stanley Co., both in Chambersburg.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Chambersburg and Win-One Philathea Sunday School Class.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Martha Custis Chapter and local AARP.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder will officiate. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Lester P. Merritt

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Lester Paul Merritt, 66, of Shiloh Estates, Charles Town, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born May 15, 1932, in South Weymouth, Mass., he was the son of the late Lester C. and Annetta McBride Merritt.

He graduated from Durfee Technical School, Fall River, Mass., and from Dartmouth University, Dartmouth, Mass. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.

He was retired in 1994 from the National Weather Service Division of the Department of Commerce.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served during the Korean War.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a member of Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948, both of Charles Town, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Beverly J. "Bev" Wiley Merritt, at home; one stepson, Isaac Lee Cox of Bethany, Mo.; one half sister, Margaret Harkins of Warwick, R.I.; one brother, William C. Merritt of Middleboro, Mass.; four half brothers, Robert Jones of Carver, Mass., Steven Merritt of Farmington, Mass., Edward Merritt of Massachusetts and Rick Merritt of Connecticut; one stepgrandchild; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one stepgrandchild.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Revs. James Chambly and Gary Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Miriam Cemetery, Bethany, on Saturday.

Mary E. Moreland

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Mary Elaine Moreland, 80, of Glen Burnie, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at her home.

Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Brooklyn Park, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mamie Leiman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond T. Moreland Sr.

She was a 1936 graduate of Glen Burnie High School.

She was employed at Cedar Hill Florist and retired as a sales clerk from Hochschild Kohn at Harundale Mall.

She was a member of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher.

She was a past member of Ladies Auxiliary, Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Maryland Bible Society, and was a den mother for Cub Scouts.

She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Raymond T. Moreland Sr. of Frederick, Md., and James E. Moreland of Perry Hall, Md.; one brother, Dr. Charles Leiman of Baltimore; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Norris; and one brother, George Leiman.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church. The Rev. R. Olin Herndon will officiate. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Kirkley-Rudick Funeral Home, 421 Crain Highway, S.E. Glen Burnie.

Nikolaus M. Fillmann

RANSON, W.Va. - Nikolaus Matias Fillmann, 87, of Ranson, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia, Charles Town, W.Va.

Born Dec. 11, 1911, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Nikolaus John and Zuzanna Tautcenberger Fillmann.

He retired from Charles Town Races where he worked as a jockey's valet.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He was a member of Charles Town Moose Lodge 948.

He is survived by his wife, Reva May McCauley Fillmann; four daughters, Agnes Nicholson of Laurel, Md., Ruth Wiseman of Severna, Md., Betty Bender of Pasadena, Md., and Carolyn K. Fillmann of Ranson; one son, Nikolaus Fillmann Jr. of Severna; one sister, Esther Denyer of Anchorage, Alaska; six brothers, Samuel Fillmann of Ranson, Frank Fillmann of Lanham, Md., William Fillmann of Silver Spring, Md., Robert Fillmann and Andrew Fillmann, both of Laurel, and John Fillmann of Port Republic, Md.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Hansen; and two brothers, Raymond Fillmann and George Fillmann.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. The Rev. Richard Neal will officiate. Burial will be private.

Vernon Northcraft

ARTEMAS, Pa. - Vernon "Mike" Northcraft, 86, of Artemas, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.

Born July 23, 1912, in Northcraft, he was the son of the late Vernon and Agnes Smith Northcraft.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bridget Isabelle Northcraft, on March 9, 1999.

He was a retired dairy farmer.

He was a member of Fairview Christian Church.

He is survived by one son, Edward V. Northcraft of Flintstone, Md.; one brother, Leo Northcraft of Walfordsburg, Pa.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Delphine Clingerman, Zoe Fisher, and Opal Smith; and one brother, Theodore Northcraft.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Fairview Christian Church. The Rev. Milton Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Christian Cemetery.

Roy C. Keiper

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Roy Clifford Keiper, 80, of Kabletown Road, Charles Town, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Nov. 21, 1918, in Conemaugh, Pa., he was the son of the late Emery M. and Catherine M. Karns Keiper.

He was employed as a steelworker in Johnstown, Pa.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Elizabeth Hipp Keiper, who resides with her daughter in Cloister, N.J.; one son, Roy Clifford Keiper Jr. of Charles Town; a stepdaughter, Regina DeNicola of Cloister, N.J.; a stepson, Robert Michael Rosenbaum of Pittsburgh; a sister, Dorothy Gillman of Johnstown; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Keiper, Harry Keiper and Homer Keiper.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Johnstown. The Rev. Joseph Fleming will officiate. Burial will be private.

There will be no visitation.

George F. Jacobs

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - George F. Jacobs, 74, of Rt. 2, Martinsburg, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born April 15, 1924, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late George M. and Addie Proctor Jacobs.

He retired from DuPont.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He was a member of Berkeley Lodge 37, A.F. & A.M., Hedgesville, W.Va., Martinsburg Lodge 120, Loyal Order of Moose and American Legion, Sharpsburg.

He is survived by his wife, E. Marie Ronk Jacobs, at home; two sons, Frederick W. Jacobs of Martinsburg, and Randall Lee Jacobs of Monrovia, Md.; one sister, Beulah Jane Wasson of Martinsburg; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery with Masonic services by Berkeley Lodge 37, A.F. & A.M.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Martinsburg Lodge 120 Loyal Order of Moose will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Martinsburg Lodge 120, Loyal Order of Moose Scholarship Fund, 201 Woodbury Ave., Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Master Masons will meet Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the lodge hall before going to the funeral home.
