Man pinned by tree in W.Va.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A man pinned by a tree that he cut down Saturday afternoon off Kelly Island Road south of Martinsburg was “very lucky” to survive the accident, Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Marty Roberts said.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg for treatment after he had been screaming for help for at least an hour and a half in the 2000 block of Kelly Island Road, Roberts said.
The man managed to free one leg pinned by the tree by digging with his hands, but was unable to free the other, Roberts said.
A West Virginia State Police trooper who initially responded about 2:30 p.m. attempted to use a chain saw at the accident site to free the man, but the machine ran out of gas and the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Co. was dispatched, Roberts said.
