Colleagues shocked by death of Myers’ son
ANNAPOLIS — On Thursday morning, Del. LeRoy E. Myers Jr. was talking with fellow lawmakers in Annapolis about the pain a Washington County family was feeling after losing their son, Nick Adenhart.
Hours later, Myers was experiencing that same pain.
His youngest son, Ryan Andrew Myers, 23, died after crashing his motorcycle on Md. 63 near the Pilot Travel Center near Williamsport.
Fellow Washington County delegation members and others with whom Myers, R-Allegany/Washington, is close in Annapolis said Friday they were shocked and devastated by the news of his loss.
“We’re all obviously very saddened down here,” said Del. John P. Donoghue, D-Washington. “I pray that God gives (Myers) and his family strength and courage and peace in this traumatic time.”
Del. Christopher B. Shank, R-Washington, announced the death of Myers’ son Friday morning on the floor of the House of Delegates. An announcement also was made during a Republican caucus meeting that morning.
“LeRoy was extremely devoted to Ryan,” Shank said in an interview. “He talked about him all the time.”
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley released a statement Friday, saying “I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Ryan Andrew Myers, who died suddenly in a tragic motorcycle accident yesterday.”
“My thoughts, and the thoughts and prayers of all Marylanders, are with the family of Ryan Myers, including his father, Del. LeRoy Myers, on this very difficult and sad day.”
Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, said Myers was extremely proud of his son, and he was looking forward to him taking a more prominent role in his business.
In conversations Del. Richard B. Weldon had with Myers about his son, Weldon said he sensed a real closeness between the two.
“LeRoy was extremely proud of Ryan, and the man he was becoming,” Weldon said. “My heart just aches for LeRoy.”
Del. Joseph R. Bartlett, R-Frederick, who is close to Myers and serves on a committee with him, said he saw Myers and his son together several times during the Alsatia Mummers Parade.
Ryan would sometimes drive Myers in one of his cars during the parade.
“(Myers) is very close with his family,” Bartlett said. “This ... this is just a huge blow.”
