Four charged in thefts from retail stores
Four people have been charged in a series of thefts from retail stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.
Local police said they found on Monday a stolen U-Haul trailer parked in front of the Kmart store on Massey Boulevard, where they believe more thefts were going to occur.
Charged were Rebecca Lynn Crew, 25, Charles Anthony Crew, 29, Rodger Lee Simpkins, 27, and Brittany Elizabeth Hamilton, 19, according to a news release sent out Tuesday by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. It was not clear when the four were charged.
Rebecca Crew was charged with theft and Charles Crew, her husband, was charged with fleeing and eluding and other charges, according to Investigator Greg Alton.
Simpkins and Hamilton were each charged with obstructing and hindering, Alton said.
The Crews are from Owings Mills, Md., and Simpkins and Hamilton are from 315 Fulton Ave., Baltimore, police said.
The announcements of the arrests followed a Friday police pursuit of a car in which Rebecca Crew was a passenger. The driver of the car, whom they believe was Charles Crew, ran from the car.
Investigators had been looking for the car in connection with retail thefts. It was spotted Friday on U.S. 11 near North Pointe Drive. A deputy chased the car through areas including Paradise Church Road and Woodhaven Drive.
The stolen U-Haul trailer was spotted outside the local Kmart at about 9 p.m. Monday and Charles Crew was identified at that scene, said sheriff’s department crime analyst Karie Kirchoff.
The case involved thefts from Giant, Kmart and Wal-Mart that started in March, the release said.
During the thefts, individuals entered stores and filled a blue container with items like electric razors, Sonicare toothbrushes, Prilosec, Nicorette and other expensive hygiene products, the release said.
