Martinsburg man charged after $26K worth of cocaine found in car

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — One of the largest amounts of crack cocaine ever confiscated from one person in the Eastern Panhandle — 247 grams — was seized Tuesday night by two West Virginia State Police troopers during a traffic stop, according to a press release from First Sgt. E.D. Burnett.

Ricky Donnell Poteat, 48, of 409 W. Race St. in Martinsburg, W.Va., was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He was released Wednesday from Eastern Regional Jail after posting bail for a $25,000 bond set by Magistrate William Senseney, according to court records.

Poteat allegedly was speeding on the new, four-lane section of W.Va. 9 in Jefferson County near Bardane in a black Xterra about 11:30 p.m. when the troopers stopped the vehicle, Burnett said.

The vehicle was traveling 76 mph in a 60-mph zone on W.Va. 9 between Currie and Wiltshire roads, Burnett said.

After stopping the vehicle, one of the troopers received permission from the driver to search the vehicle. The trooper found a large, clear plastic Ziploc bag containing nine smaller bags filled with crack cocaine, Burnett said.

The drugs were valued at about $26,900, Burnett said.
