Preps Area Roundup — Blazers advance in 1A West playoffs

GRANTSVILLE, Md. — Damara McDonough pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and Clear Spring beat Northern Garrett 5-1 in the first round of the Maryland Class 1A West playoffs Saturday.

The Blazers (11-4) got all of their runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Heather Schlotterbeck had two RBIs in the rally, while Hannah Leizear, Korey Atherton and Meagan Price each had one.

Amber Forrest and Leizear each doubled and finished with two hits, while Morgan Purdham also had two hits for Clear Spring.

The Blazers play at Poolesville on Monday.

INWOOD, W.Va. — Jess Shirley pitched a complete game and had two of Hedgesville’s eight hits, including a double, as the Eagles defeated Musselman in the West Virginia Region II Section 2 championship game.

Sam Nazelrod had two hits, including a solo home run, for the Eagles (18-3), who will play in the region semifinals Thursday at Jefferson.

Kaila Adams hit a two-run homer for Musselman (14-12).

Greencastle starter Autumn Appleby (8-1) allowed one hit while striking out five in four innings, and Rachel Kline pitched three innings of perfect relief with five strikeouts.

With two outs and nobody on base in the first, Rochelle Christman reached on an error and Rachel Statler, Rachel Kline, Chey Melius and Brittany Norling followed with consecutive singles to produce three runs for Greencastle (17-2)

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Indians sprayed 10 hits around the diamond but still fell short in the West Virginia Class AA Region II Section 2 playoffs.

Chelsea Hessler had three hits and Brooke Hessler and Harley Stotler each had two hits for Berkeley Springs (7-12), which scored its only run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Chelsea Hessler.

INWOOD, W.Va. — Four Martinsburg pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the Bulldogs beat Musselman for the fourth time this season.

Noon Jordan, Travis Hovermale, Eli Fulk and T.J. Weisenberg took turns on the mound with Hovermale collecting the win.

Martinsburg (19-8) had only five hits but also drew five walks and took advantage of seven Applemen erorrs.

Mark Clatterbuck had the only two hits for Musselman (12-13).

Trojans win Mid-Penn title

COLONIAL PARK, Pa. — The Chambersburg boys captured their first team title at the Mid-Penn Conference championships Saturday, topping the field of 28 schools with 99 points. Milton Hershey was a distant second with 66.

Chambersburg’s Tyson Keith, Swaine Hinton, Dakota Grove and ConRoy Smith teamed to win the 4x100-meter relay in 42.52 seconds, breaking the Tri-State area record by two-hundredths of a second. Chambersburg set the previous mark of 42.54 in 1990.

Smith also won the 200 (22.42) and placed second in both the 100 (11.08) and long jump (21-4 1/2). Also for the Trojans, Kavon Bailey (45-10) and Orlando McBeth (44-3 1/4) took first and third in the triple jump, David Eubanks placed second in the 800 (1:59.17), Caleb Hussack was second in the high jump (6-3) and Keith took third in the 200 (22.76).

In other boys action, Waynesboro’s Cory Young won the 110 hurdles (14.69), James Buchanan’s Brandon Smith won the 300 hurdles (38.97) and placed third in the 110 hurdles (15.11) and JB’s Nathaniel Witter won the pole vault (14-3).

Katrina Wright won the shot put (38-8 1/2) and discus (130-2) for the Greencastle-Antrim girls.

For the Chambersburg girls, Anyssa Barbour placed second in the 200 (25.61), Jessica Whitmore placed third in the 100 (12.44) and third in the 200 (25.66) and both ran legs on the third-place 4x100 (49.90). Kelsey Baker placed third in the pole vault (9-0) for the Trojans.

Storm’s Walker sets MAPL record

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Mercersburg Academy’s Asia Walker won the girls long jump at the Mid-Atlantic Prep League championships with a league-record jump of 18 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

The Mercersburg girls, who finished second to host Lawrenceville, had three other winners — Lena Finucane in the 1,600 (5:30.30), Abby Colby in the 3,200 (12:32.35) and Paige Summers in the discus (104-1).

The Mercersburg boys finished fourth out of six teams.

Bard, Shehan win ICC titles

LOYSBURG, Pa. — Southern Fulton’s Amy Bard won the girls 400 (1:01.8) and 800 (2:29.9), and McConnellsburg’s Robert Shehan won the boys discus (150-4) at the ICC Championships.

Tad Holzapfel and Forrest Allen each scored two goals and James Gotoff, Peter Flanagan and David Whyel had one goal each. Freshman Alex Kelly posted 18 saves.
