AIR RIFLE

COLUMBUS, Ga. — West Virginia University senior Bryant Wallizer, a Hancock graduate, won the 2009 USA Shooting National Championships air rifle title on June 16 at Fort Benning’s International Shooting Complex.

Wallizer automatically qualified for the U.S. National Development team.

“This is insane. I came down here to do a job, and I did it,” Wallizer said in a WVU press release. “I’m really excited. I think winning today is bigger than winning the NCAA Championship because there is a broader base of competition. This is just a huge honor.”

“It was great to watch Bryant shoot so well over the last two days,” said Mountaineers coach Jon Hammond. “I’m really proud of him. He’s been training really hard the past few months and came in to this championship very focused.”

Wallizer’s consistently strong shooting propelled him to the title, as he shot 594 on the first day of the competition — one point short of his personal-best — and 591 on the second day. He shot 103.4 in the top-eight final.

The win comes on the heels of a strong junior season for Wallizer, a 2009 National Rifle Association first-team air rifle All-American, who finished second at the 2009 NCAA Championships.

YOUTH GOLF

Bushey leads juniors

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Smithsburg’s Chris Bushey opened the Tri-State Junior Golf Association campaign with a 2-under 70 on Monday to lead all golfers at Waynesboro Country Club.

Bushey topped the 16-18 age division, five strokes ahead of Waynesboro’s Derek Baker.

Hank Strickler, of Chambersburg, captured first place in the 14-15 division with a 75, two strokes better than Peter Denney. Austin Green’s 80 was one stroke better than four other golfers in the 12-13 age group.

The second event in the Tri-State series will be next Monday with an 8:30 a.m. start at Fountain Head Country Club.

AC Milan Junior Camp

The FC Frederick soccer club will host an AC Milan Junior Camp at St. Thomas More Academy in Buckeystown, Md., on July 20-24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Two coaches for the Italian professional club AC Milan will run the camp, open to boys and girls ages 7 to 17.
