8-year-old cyclist hit by car

SAINT JAMES — An 8-year-old boy suffered compound fractures to both legs and a head injury Thursday night after he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle in front of 9045 Jordan Road, officials said.

The boy was riding a bicycle in the road when a Pontiac Grand Am came over the crest of a hill and struck him, according to a 911 dispatcher and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

The female driver of the car stopped and called authorities at 7:04 p.m., a Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said. The boy was unconscious after the accident, a 911 dispatcher said.

The boy was flown by helicopter to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., as a priority one patient, the dispatcher said. Priority one is the most serious designation for injuries.

A reconstructionist will investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, police said.
