Mail Call

"Good news flash: Many awesome, honest, caring people do exist. Friday, my wallet was missing, as I searched to pay for items I selected at Goodwill. The staff helped search everywhere, to no avail. ... On Saturday a lady appeared at the Goodwill register with my wallet in hand, stating she found it in the store - can you believe it? Praise God for this awesome, honest, caring, beautiful lady, whoever she is, as well as the staff at Goodwill." - Williamsport

"The homeowners of the South End of Hagerstown are sick of the kids on skateboards and bikes running on their lawns and driveways, throwing trash and breaking up things. We have called police, and we have not seen anyone to this date. It happens after school is out, weekends and evenings. ... We are talking about West Wilson Boulevard and Spruce Street. It is costing us a lot of money for cleanup and repairs." - Hagerstown

"To the caller who prays for rain so they can count cars without their lights on: Please find another hobby. I suggest looking for spelling errors in the dictionary. Some of us are too busy texting to remember to turn them on." - Huyetts

"Charles Krauthammer says, 'The principled argument needs to be made that while government can and should debate and criticize opposition voices, the current White House goes beyond that. It wants to delegitimize any significant dissent.' Where was he when the Nixon and Bush-Cheney administrations were compiling their 'enemies lists'?" - Chambersburg, Pa.

"I write in regards to the economy. Why is it that contractors and businesses hire illegal immigrants and the government doesn't step in and impose stiff fines and or shut their businesses down for hiring them? We have American people out of work, out of food, don't have health care and losing the place they live in because these people choose to hire someone for little pay. ... These people don't have to pay taxes, don't have to (have) liability insurance, workers comp or anything the average American must have or pay for." - Boonsboro

"Washington County Junior Football League: Are you not a league for third- through eighth-graders, most of whom are 8- to 14-year-olds? Sports at this age should be about learning, developing skills, and playing, not creating superstars or winning teams. So, when one or two players are the only players who continually stand on the sidelines playing your 'minimum,' then tell me how they are learning and developing skills if they are not playing the game? Every player should be playing, and not just playing the minimum time you designate. They are kids, and this is youth sports, not college." - Hagerstown

"Every morning when my alarm clock jolts me awake, I think about the welfare takers and how they get to sleep in. People getting a free handout should still have to get up early and go somewhere and stay there eight hours." - Hancock

"Amen to the Martinsburg caller, Oct. 26, reminding us of the Bush administration putting us in Iraq, and then the trillions it is costing us, not to mention the thousands killed and maimed, and Cheney yakking away as though he has no fault for all of this. One word: Halliburton. ... The profits that Cheney has received from Halliburton is positively egregious. Plus, we were lied to, and it was an egregiously unnecessary war. This is what you people need to think about." - Funkstown

"I'm reading the morning paper here, Hagerstown morning paper, and I see where Frederick, Md., wants, the sheriff wants to charge their prisoners or whoever they put in the jail, $10 a day for food. I think that's the best thing ever happened, because if they can go out here and get in trouble and then they can eat and sleep, we're keeping them. I mean, I know you all understand that. So I think it's good to charge them $10 a day, and then when they get out, they must go to work and pay that $10." - Boonsboro

"I think the county treasurer should remain an elected position. If you put it up as a hired staff position, I am sure the Washington County Commissioners already have somebody waiting in the wings to just slip in there. And I have called about this, and nobody has ever called me back from the county commissioners' office." - Hagerstown

"The children that did the damage at the Williamsport cemetery should be over there when the restoration is being taken care of and they should help with it, and also, for three years they should be required to do general maintenance at the cemetery, along with their parents." - Hagerstown

"Thank you, Mr. Pitts, for your (column regarding) Rush's position on race matters. I always thought the man was just a fool, but I can see now that he's a bigoted fool." - Hedgesville, W.Va.

"For the caller from Hagerstown that said he bleeds red, white and blue, and we are in Iraq and Afghanistan because of 9/11: We should have been in Saudi Arabia; 15 came from there. But Bush would not do that. He would rather hold their hand and dance with them." - Clear Spring

"I read the comments about - someone had posted that it is better for pets to be abandoned than to be turned in to the SPCA, and I wanted to add to what was commented there, that that is totally wrong. My own niece was stupid enough to abandon her cat, and when my sister found out and went to save the cat, a neighbor lady said that some teenage boys had tortured the cat and set it on fire. So I hope people realize what happens when they abandon their domestic animals." - Washington County

"I was in Washington County Hospital, Oct. 21 to 23. I just want to say that my experience was excellent, from start to finish. And I was the only man on the fourth floor. I want to say that the nurses and the nurses' assistants were excellent, and I just want to give a big thank you to all the nurses there." - Smithsburg

"This is to the grandparents from Williamsport. I liked your article in Monday's paper, Oct. 26, about your grandchildren not showing their love to you, but they expect it at Christmas. Not only grandchildren - as well, grown children. They hit home, and I can imagine a lot of other homes." - Mercersburg, Pa.

"This is about the two pilots that overshot their destination by 150 miles. If they weren't sleeping, I would say maybe they were playing video games, or maybe they were making out. Those two things can make you lose track of time." - Hagerstown

"Stop and think - Bush did not get us in Iraq; bin Laden did, when he trained terrorists to kill 3,000-plus innocent Americans. If Bush had done nothing, you or some of your family could have been killed in the next attack. We should all be down on our knees thanking the young people who have been willing to protect our country. God bless America." - Wolfsville, Md.

"This is to the Hagerstown caller that was appalled or had a hard time dealing with people that live out of state and work in Washington County. I do, too. There's about 15,000 people from West Virginia and Pennsylvania who work in Hagerstown or Washington County, pay no taxes here, do nothing here but use up the things we have here. I have a problem with this, and I think it's time for it to stop." - Hagerstown
