Mail Call

"I see where the state is asking - I mean the county, Washington County, the regulations, trying to, they're asking the school board how they can cut the deficit. Mr. Myers asked Mrs. Morgan, the superintendent, where she might make layoffs, but then down here then Mrs. Morgan did make sense here. She asked the General Assembly to suspend unfunded mandates, like they're required to buy school buses every 12 years. That's like firetrucks." - Hagerstown

"I can't believe the American people are gonna stand up for this nonsense of being fined if you don't have medical insurance. What gives the government the right to do that to us? This is supposed to be the land of the free, not the land of the downtrodden. Most people would have medical insurance if they could afford it." - Hagerstown

"Would somebody please help us? My husband lost his job, but is working at a much less paying job, and I work. The problem is we had our mortgage adjusted and we're getting a new amount to pay each month, which we have been doing, and on time. Now, they are telling us we are not approved, and they have accepted our new payment each time. We cannot afford lawyer fees, and we have two small children. Our house is just a starter home. President Obama didn't intend for a stimulus for homeowners to save their homes to be handled this way." - Mercersburg, Pa.

"The county schools are in the paper today for considering layoffs. I would suggest that you do like the state employees do and cut back on your raises and also cut back on your steps. Are you getting a raise and step both? A good percent raise and a step, cut that out. That would eliminate a lot of the money. And also, do like we do. I'm a state employee, and you know, take, maybe take some layoff days and take a pay cut instead of getting a raise." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in about we court-martialed our soldiers in Iraq for simple things like putting a leash on a prisoner, yet here's Jim Warner, the way he was treated in prison in Vietnam - who was court-martialed for mistreating him? Nobody. Turn our men loose." - Hagerstown

"This call is regarding the accidents at the YMCA on Eastern Boulevard. The simplest and most cost-effective resolution may very well be to make the exit from the YMCA right turn only, thereby eliminating the problem of cross traffic and waiting for traffic to clear." - Hagerstown

"Judge Boone has a DUI. At my hearing, he said I was a threat on the highway, that I could have struck a school bus, injuring or killing many students. Judge Boone knows better. ... Our tax dollars pay his salary. He is supposed to be a role model for our children. Take his license away for a year, and send him to AA meetings and health department four times a week for eight months like he gave me." - Clear Spring

"Looks like George Steinbrenner bought himself another World Series. Money talks." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the caller from Chewsville, in reference to the New York Yankees and their 27th world championship, and the people wearing the New York Yankee hats and no one wearing the Boston Red Sox hats anymore. I'm an Orioles fan, and until baseball has a real salary cap, you'll continue to see the Yankees buy their way into championships." - Hagerstown

"This is to the callers regarding their subject of prisoners and the treatment of them while incarcerated at the detention center. My point is, the incarceration is their punishment for their crime. Whatever their crime was, they were sent to jail, meaning they are no longer part of society. That's their punishment. To continually punish them while they are incarcerated by taking away certain privileges that are rewarded while being rehabilitated is not only ineffective but inhumane, and punishing the inmate over and over again just breeds hate." - Hagerstown

"Does President Obama think that American people are little children and he can just give us a piece of candy and keep us quiet? If he'd just give everybody a job, give people a job, give us work, we'll buy our own candy, and he won't be going through all this, and he can stay home and take care of other important details in this great big wild country of ours." - Flintstone, Md.

"I agree with getting rid of Gov. O'Malley. He wants to cut state workers' pay, but the inmates get a raise for their jobs in prison. They seem to have more rights than people who actually work an honest living. My husband is a hardworking state employee and gets treated less respect than the inmates. Wake up, O'Malley, and do us all a favor and don't run again." - Hancock

"I think for all we owe our veterans, it would be a wonderful thing if the old Washington County Hospital could become a veterans hospital." - Hagerstown

"I live in an exclusive subdivision in Boonsboro. I have neighbors that blow their leaves out onto the street, and of course, they blow over to my lawn, which I don't have trees in my yard, so all the leaves collect in my yard. I would think there would be something in a law against this. Could please somebody comment on this?" - Boonsboro

"I agree, too, that we should celebrate Veterans Day, meaning have the children in the Washington County schools have that day off. That's a holiday where we should remember the people that served in any war, the men and women who suffered and died for us. We need to remember them and remember the holidays, too, in general. But yes, Veterans Day is an important holiday and they need to rethink that and have that day off instead of ... they should consider having Veterans Day off instead of these other non-important days that these kids are getting off of school for." - Hagerstown

"Just looked at the current Hot Hagerstown Male contestants. I would say we have some pretty hot guys residing in Hagerstown." - Smithsburg

"I certainly hope The Herald-Mail does not take seriously a caller's suggestion that they stop printing any negative comments about this president. That would be a violation of our right to free speech and freedom of the press. Just because a man is president does not give him a free pass to do anything he wants to do and change this country into something the majority of the people do not want." - Hagerstown

"It's good to see the Washington County BOE is struggling financially. It's about time this happened, so those people get their head on straight and start thinking of the taxpayers. Do not come to the Washington County Commissioners. We the taxpayers are giving you adequate money now. Raise the classroom size to state capacity of 26. That'll help you. Turn all unused electric out." - Washington County
