Broadfording students named to National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is the leader among organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.

On Oct. 19, the following high school students were inducted into Broadfording Christian Academy's Colossians 3:17 chapter of the NHS:

Rebecca Adams was recognized for her leadership role on the girls' varsity volleyball team at BCA and also for her two mission trips to Guatemala in Central America, where she ministered to underprivileged children, and Galveston, Texas, where she helped with disaster relief efforts. In addition to volleyball, her extracurricular activities include vocal ensemble and drama with the Thurmont Thespians.

Kelsey Burkhardt was recognized for her role as the Lions Roar newspaper editor and also for her leadership in helping Boonsboro Bible Church with its annual VBS program. Her extracurricular activities include volleyball, basketball, soccer, yearbook, newspaper, Choral Ambassadors, and Pep Club.

Katarina Byrkit is a lead person on the Rocks & Ropes staff at Mount Aetna Camp and Retreat Center, a song leader for her church, and an assistant for Teen Leadership in Training through the Williamsport Warriors Pathfinder Club. She has volunteered in the horse barn at Mount Aetna Camp and Retreat Center, taught a “Friend” class through the Pathfinder Club and also collected non-perishable food items and unloaded fruit for the club, and prepared and served food at the R.E.A.C.H. homeless shelter in Hagerstown. She participates in the Home Sweet, Home School choir, bell choir, and band, and is a member of the orchestra at Williamsport SDA church.

Kelli Crider serves as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes student leader and also serves on the BCA Worship Team. Her service projects include a mission trip to Milwaukee, WI through the Powerplant Mission Organization where she helped minister to the community there. Kelli also went on a mission trip to Corbin, NY where she worked with the Friends for Families ministry. She volunteers for her local church by helping with its VBS program. Her extracurricular activities include girls' varsity volleyball, Choral Ambassadors, newspaper and yearbook.

Kristin Hixon currently holds the position of Assistant Editor for the Lions Roar newspaper. She has served in the past as the Lifestyle Section Editor for the newspaper. Her extracurricular activities include being a member of the Choral Ambassadors and the BCA 2010 Mission Team that will be traveling to Costa Rica this spring.

Casslyn Miller has held the position of News Editor for the Lions Roar newspaper and has served as a crew leader the last two summers for Broadfording Bible Brethren Church's VBS programs. Her service projects include volunteering at the American Red Cross, the Hagerstown Rescue Mission, and Broadfording Christian Academy. Her extracurricular activities include drama, newspaper, Choral Ambassadors, the Praise & Worship Team, soccer and creative writing. Casslyn has worked several years at Chick-fil-A in Hagerstown and has been responsible for training seven employees there.

Kendra Miller's leadership experience includes being a junior staffer for two years for the Jeremiah Project in Winchester, Va. She has served on three mission trips: The Henderson Settlement in White Oak, TN, the Brio Missions project called PERUVIT in Lima, Peru, and the Jeremiah Project in Winchester, Va. Kendra is also active in her local church. Her extracurricular activities include participating on the Youth Reaching Others for Christ drama team, working as a junior reporter and photographer for The Journal in Martinsburg, W.Va., and playing violin and tambourine for Lifesavers Youth Worship Band.

Zachary Snodderly serves as a church time helper for Maugansville Bible Brethren Church. He is a member of the BCA Homeschool Leadership Team and has served as a second team captain for the boys' varsity baseball team at BCA. Zach's service projects include helping with VBS at his church, a mission trip to Kentucky where he helped restore a gymnasium for a local Christian school, another mission trip to West Virginia where he helped renovate an old school that became a place for missionaries to stay when visiting, and helping with community Thanksgiving meals at his church.

Stephen Torres has been a longtime captain for the BCA boys' varsity soccer team, a Youth Conservation Corps Youth Leader at Antietam National Battlefield, and president of the BCA Homeschool Leadership Team. Stephen's service projects include assisting and teaching children's classes at Zion Assembly of God in Hagerstown. He helped organize and serve refreshments at the See You at the Pole event in September, wrapped gifts for mall customers for the American Red Cross, and planted potatoes for Celebration Farm in Hagerstown. Stephen has been employed the last two summers through the Youth Conservation Corps at Antietam National Battlefield where he has assisted park rangers with various projects aimed at restoring the battlefield to its original state.

Hannah Tussing's leadership experience includes being a web page designer at New Hope Alliance Church in Williamsport. She has also served as an advertising coordinator for her church. Her service projects include helping disabled riders at Star Equestrian Center in Hagerstown, working at the rabies clinic at the Humane Society of Washington County, and volunteering at her local church. Her extracurricular activities include playing golf for BCA, being a journalist and Pulse member at The Herald-Mail Co., and participating in the home school drama group called Y-ROC.

Andrew Wyand is currently leading the High School Praise & Worship Team at BCA. This team is responsible for both the middle and high school chapels held each week. His service projects include singing and playing guitar for the Broadfording Bible Brethren Church's worship team, helping with his church's annual VBS programs, and most recently helping with the Convoy of Hope event held at the Hagerstown Fairgrounds. Andrew's extracurricular activities include playing on the boys' varsity soccer, basketball, and baseball teams. He is a longstanding member of the Choral Ambassadors and has participated in yearbook and newspaper.
