Frocks and Fellowship Frolic deeply discounts dresses
BOONSBORO — Laurin Smith and her mother, Kristy, share a love.
Not just for each other, but for clothes.
“We both have the fashion bug,” said Laurin, 17, of Boonsboro. “We just love to get dressed up.”
So when Laurin read in Seventeen magazine about a fun way to provide prom dresses for girls at a low cost, she got her mother on board. The two garnered help from the congregation and youth group at Trinity Lutheran Church. They gathered a collection of dresses and organized the Frocks and Fellowship Frolic.
The mother-daughter team hosted the third annual frolic Saturday, offering more than 200 dresses in a variety of styles, colors and sizes. Most were priced in the $30 range. Some cost as little as $5 or $10, while a couple of new ones with tags were priced at $50 or $100.
“I don’t think people should always have to pay $400 for a dress they are only going to wear once,” Laurin Smith said. “This way, people can find their dream dress for $50.”
Sarah Cook, 16, of Boonsboro, tried on six dresses in search of the right one for her prom. The last one was periwinkle and floor-length with silver- and pearl-beaded embellishment.
“I found a lot of things I like,” Sarah said. “Unfortunately, some are too big and some are too small. This one might be it.”
Tori Aikens, 16, of Hedgesville, W.Va., shopped for a dress for her high school banquet. She is a student at Grace Academy and said the event is similar to a prom. She settled on a tailored, heavy satin dress in sky blue with a black sash and bow. The cost was $30.
Jomar Tussing, 44, of Hagerstown, picked up a grape-hued gown with tulle overlay and sequins for her daughter, Hannah, 17, to wear to a banquet at Broadfording Christian Academy. She then got on her cell phone and called cast members of a play she is working on to tell them about possible costume ideas she had found.
Meanwhile, Tussing noticed Lisa Smith, owner of Rain or Shine Tanning Salon. Smith had set up a table at the event offering discounted tanning sessions as well as manicure and pedicure deals.
“I think this is wonderful,” Tussing said of the event. “You guys have the whole package.”
