MERCERSBURG, Pa. - An essay by Danny Roza, an 11th-grader at Mercersburg Academy, earned top honors in the 2009-10 Fund for the Future of our Children Peace Essay Contest. The award, which includes a $2,500 prize, was announced during a March 28 ceremony at Georgetown University.
Entrants were asked to examine what the Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) teach us about compassion, and how their founders serve as exemplars of compassion. Entrants were also asked to propose a teen-based project that embodies compassionate principles.
Fund for the Future of our Children is a Washington, D.C.-based organization that was established in 1993 and is dedicated to nurturing and shaping the youth of today into tomorrow's leaders for peace.
Roza, of Hagerstown, is the son of Eli and Susan Roza.
He and 16 other finalists were honored during the Georgetown event, which was held in the Riggs Library and featured a keynote speech by Farah Pandith, who serves as special representative to Muslim communities for the U.S. Department of State. Pandith, who reports directly to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, is known for her support of youth in efforts toward interfaith understanding.
