Ruth J. Green

WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio - Ruth Jane Green, 86, of Arbors West, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 22, 2001.

Born Oct. 29, 1915, in Washington County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry Willis Wallick and Elizabeth B. Zimmerman.

Her husband of 50 years, Jacob Parker Green, died in 1986.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Hagerstown.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois Wolfinger of Hagerstown, and Judy Arganbright of West Jefferson; a son, Robert Green of West Jefferson; a sister, Ethel Green of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edyth Wallick and Mary Gearhart; and two brothers, Clarence Wallick and John Wallick.

Services will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Fred Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

M. Kathryn Smith

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - M. Kathryn Small Smith, 90, of Penn Hall Nursing Home, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, following a lengthy illness.

Born March 25, 1910, in Guilford Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late H. Clayton and Anna Mary Wagner Small.

Her husband, Dr. Forrest F. Smith, died Aug. 10, 1985.

She was a 1928 graduate of Chambersburg High School, and a 1931 graduate of Germantown Dispensary and Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia.

She was a private duty registered nurse in Philadelphia from 1931 to 1937. For 30 years from 1950 to 1980, she assisted her late husband in the operation of his medical practice in the Professional Arts Building.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member and past president of the W.E.L.C.A., a member of the Augusburg Sunday School Class, and was organizer and chairperson of the wedding reception committee.

She was a member and volunteer with the American Red Cross, a member and past president of the Auxiliary of the Franklin County Medical Society, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Chambersburg Hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah S. Mallory of Philadelphia, and Barbara S. Montgomery of Chambersburg; a son, Forrest M. Smith of New Castle, Va.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Revs. Charles W. Kampmeyer and Ruth Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.

Visitation will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Martha K. McDowell

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Martha K. McDowell, 88, a resident of Penn Hall Nursing Home, and formerly of 3225 Parnell Drive, St. Thomas, Pa., died Friday, March 24, 2001, at the home.

Born Oct. 21, 1912, in St. Thomas, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Laura Kendall McDowell.

She was a graduate of Lemasters High School, Lemasters, Pa. She was also a graduate of Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, Pa.

She taught kindergarten and first grade in the Chambersburg School District from 1946 until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg, Pa., where she was active in the Women's Association and the church newsletter. She also taught Sunday School for many years.

She was a member of Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Gettysburg, Pa.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Thomas of Wyomissing, Pa.; a brother, Robert A. McDowell of Lemasters; three nephews, William R. McDowell of Lemasters, Thomas C. McDowell of Chambersburg, and John H. McDowell of Greencastle, Pa.; grand-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary C. McDowell; and a brother, James W. McDowell.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg. The Rev. Michael K. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.

The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Ethel M. Calimer

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Ethel M. Zeigler Calimer, 97, of 10202 Old Forge Road, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born March 4, 1904, in Edgemont, Md., she was the daughter of the late Rafus and Amanda Patterson Zeigler.

Her husband, Daniel Calimer, died June 19, 1984. They were married Nov. 12, 1921.

She was first employed as a laundress for Conservation Civilian Corps CCC Camps, and later worked for Knouse Foods and did domestic work in the area along with her daughters.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Walters of Hagerstown, Betty J. Guessford of Waynesboro, and Peggy A. Stoops of Rye, Texas; four sons, Calvin C. Calimer, Carl D. Calimer, and Gary L. Calimer, all of Waynesboro, and Alfred L. Calimer of Kissimmee, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren; and 20 step-great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jesse F. Calimer Sr., in 1994; two sisters, Agnes Shirk and Annie Carrey; three brothers, George Zeigler, John Zeigler and Percey Zeigler; two grandsons; and a great-grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Wayne L. Kuhns will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William D. Werdebaugh

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - William D. "Don" Werdebaugh, 74, a resident of Manor Care, and formerly of 3437 Carnoustie Drive, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born April 7, 1926, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Earl Dean and Thelma K. Harbaugh Werdebaugh.

He was a graduate of Smithsburg High School.

He retired in 1985 after 31 years as a sales representative with General Mills Inc., Hollywood, Fla.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was a member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, and Hume, McNeal, Byers AMVETS Post 224, both of Chambersburg, and B.P.O. Elks 731, Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Estelle L. Koons Werdebaugh, whom he married Sept. 20, 1953; a son, William J. Werdebaugh of Shippensburg, Pa.; a sister, Betsey Fleagle of Waynesboro; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Maybelle Shrader; and four brothers, James Richard Werdebaugh, Eugene C. Werdebaugh, John H. Werdebaugh, and Harry Thomas Werdebaugh.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Ruth E. Smith will officiate. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Richard E. Pheil

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Richard E. Pheil, 78, of 744 E. Garfield St., died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home.

Born Nov. 8, 1922, in Williamson, Pa., he was the son of the late Jonas S. and Lulu Detrich Pheil.

He was an electrical foreman for Chambersburg Engineering Co., retiring in April 1988 after 47 years of service.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Chambersburg.

He was a member of VFW Post 1599, Burt J. Asper Post American Legion, The Chambersburg Club, and Elks B.P.O. 600, all of Chambersburg, and Cumberland Valley Amateur Radio Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Eley Pheil, whom he married June 7, 1947; a daughter, Jennifer K. Pheil of Chambersburg; two sons, Douglas E. Pheil and Randall G. Pheil, both of Chambersburg; a sister, Joan Henderson of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Jack Pheil of Chambersburg; and a grandson.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Herbert H. Snyder

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Herbert H. Snyder, 72, of 16 Queen City Pavement, and a resident of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 24, 1929, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clarence and Eva L. Martin Snyder.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, and attended Shepherd College.

He was a former Maryland State Policeman.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Honor Guard to Douglas MacArthur, General of the Army, from 1948 to 1950.

He was a Protestant.

He is survived by five sisters, Ruby Staley, Mary Goetz, Charlotte Hoover, Elizabeth Ridenour and Arvella Snyder, all of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Snyder; and a half-brother, Carl Bonecord.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Clarence A. Frazier

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Clarence A. Frazier, 81, of Shepherdstown, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Canterbury of Shepherdstown.

Born Sept. 15, 1919, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Henry and Mary Francis Lena Woodard Frazier.

He was manager at Myer's Orchard, Halltown, W.Va., for 36 years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hallie Longerbeam Frazier; a daughter, Ruby M. Wilt of Shepherdstown; two sons, Russell Junior Wilt of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Wayne Wilt of Charles Town, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Leroy Wilt; four sisters, Mable V. Kranenberg, Mary Potts, Lillian Keller and Laura Mauck; and three brothers, Robert Frazier, Wade Frazier and Raymond Frazier Sr.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. Philip Bayliss will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


Hugh R. Smith

WILLIAMSPORT - Hugh Russell Smith, 64, of 16144 Cloverton Lane, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1936, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Russell Edward and Catherine Annie Bell Smith.

He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1954.

He retired from AC&T, Hagerstown, in 1996.

He served with the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, Williamsport.

He was a member of Hagerstown Lodge 378 B.P.O. Elks, and Conococheague Tribe 84 I.O. Red Men, Williamsport.

He is survived by his wife, Darline Elaine Hessong Smith; two daughters, Jody Spring of Gaithersburg, Md., and Teresa Smith of Keymar, Md.; a brother, William Carlos Smith of Defusiak Springs, Fla.; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Owen W. Smith.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Richard J. Manspeaker

Richard Jewel Manspeaker, 88, of 1042 Brinker Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Williamsport Retirement Village, Williamsport.

Born Nov. 27, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Marshall and Blanche Runkles Manspeaker.

He retired in 1977 from the Western Maryland Railroad after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Christ's Reformed Church and Clever Smith Bible Sunday School class.

He was a past member of Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 378.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Hottle Manspeaker; three daughters, Ella Marie Andrews of Hagerstown, Doris Lorraine Andres of Berryville, Va., and Mary Louise Dutton of Fairfax, Va.; two sons, Clifford Jewel Manspeaker of Spring Hill, Fla., and Richard Lee Manspeaker of Hagerstown; three sisters, Martha Gish, Edith King, and Frances Shank, all of Hagerstown; three brothers, Henry Manspeaker, Walter Manspeaker and Elmer Manspeaker, all of Hagerstown; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six sisters, Louise Greene, Ethel Myers, Rayetta Manspeaker, Mary Manspeaker, Anna Frush and Evelyn Manspeaker; and five brothers, William Manspeaker, Howard Manspeaker, Raymond Manspeaker, Robert Manspeaker and Herbert Manspeaker.

Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harry Higgins Jr.

Harry Higgins Jr., 77, of 14625 Daley Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 2, 1924, in Blairs Valley, Md., he was the son of the late Harry Higgins Sr. and Ollie Chaney Higgins.

He worked for 35 years as a machinist at Pangborn Corp. in Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of Two-Top Ruritan Club near Mercersburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Helen L. Burkett Higgins, whom he married in August 1951; two daughters, Brenda Brown of West Virginia, and Pollanae Johnson of Forrestville, Md.; a son, Michael H. Higgins of Greencastle, Pa.; two sisters, Julia Belt of Clear Spring, and Ollie LeMaster of Winchester, Va.; three brothers, Willard Higgins, Lewis Higgins and Leister Higgins, all of Clear Spring; two granddaughters, and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, DeVonia Cafero and Susan Malpass; and two brothers, Russell Higgins and Frederick Higgins.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Revs. Robert Timmons and Harry Lawson will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Church Cemetery near Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hazel M. Olson

BOONSBORO - Hazel Marie Olson, 89, of Overlook Drive, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 13, 1911, in Minneapolis, she was the daughter of the late Albert Victor and Martha Maude Franklin Olson.

She was a graduate of Columbia Union College, Takoma Park, Md.

She was a member of Williamsport Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

She was a member of C.V.R.A.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth LeCoultre of Switzerland; and a nephew, Duane R. Olson of Boonsboro.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 5 p.m. at Williamsport Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 16421 Lappans Road, Williamsport. The Rev. Charles J. Griffin will officiate.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
