Noise ordinance proposal would address fireworks in city

Fireworks displays at Municipal Stadium would be under increased scrutiny in future years if the city passes an ordinance proposed during Tuesday's City Council work session.

Some residents have complained about fireworks displays held after Hagerstown Suns games, in particular one game last year in which fireworks were fired after 11 p.m., and a series of three fireworks displays around the July Fourth holiday.

Team organizers are proposing up to 14 displays this year, but General Manager Kurt Landes promised that last year's problems had been corrected.

City Councilman Lewis C. Metzner proposed changes to the city's noise ordinance to include fireworks displays. The ordinance does not specifically name fireworks displays, which are regulated by fire agencies for safety.

Once the change is drafted, it will be discussed at a future meeting.
