Dorothy R. Benedict, 91

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Dorothy R. Benedict, 91, of 3540 Edenville Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 25, 1917, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William A. and Ruth Sollenberger Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Benedict, in 1983.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Old German Baptist Church in Chambersburg.

She is survived by one son, Marlin D. Benedict of Chambersburg; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Martin; and one foster daughter, Betty J. Kerlin.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Falling Spring Old German Baptist Church in Chambersburg. The Home Brethren will officiate. Burial will follow in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.

Visitation will be Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Loren A. Chaney, 60

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Loren Allen Chaney, 60, of 1978 E. Dutch Corner Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at his home.

Born June 19, 1948, in Saxton, Pa., he was the son of the late A. Francis and Charlotte Moore Chaney.

He is survived by his wife, Normalee Chaney; one daughter, Tracie S. Kershaw of McConnellsburg; one brother, Barry F. Chaney of Martinsburg, Pa.; and two grandsons.

Services and burial will be private.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home in McConnellsburg.


Emma J. Kelly, 66

OCT. 24, 1942-NOV. 4, 2008

INWOOD, W.Va. - Emma Jean Kelly, 66, of Inwood, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Heartland of Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 24, 1942, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. Kelly and Bertha Mildred Roberts Kelly.

She had worked for Lear in Winchester, Va., until 2003.

She is survived by one daughter, Tina M. Robinson of Bedford, Pa.; one son, Harry W. Kelly of Harrisburg, Pa.; one sister, Marie B. Rickard of Martinsburg; one brother, Clair H. Kelly of Columbiana, Ohio; two grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, James H. Jones; one sister, Mildred C. Kelly; and one brother, Lester E. Kelly.

Services and burial will be private.

Theda H. Shea, 89

OCT. 20, 1919-NOV. 5, 2008

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Theda H. Shea, 89, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1919, in Funkstown, she was the daughter of the late Randall G. Herman and Florence Pearl Stockslager Herman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Shea, in 2000.

She was a 1937 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She retired from the Department of the Army, as a contracting officer.

She is survived by one daughter, Vicki C. Swartz of Charles Town; one son, Randall W. Brenner of Westfield, Vt.; four grandchildren, Eric B. Swartz, Jason T. Brenner, Laurel K. Hardy and Douglas H. Brenner; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine E. Rogers and Janet L. Gaver.

Services and burial will be private.

Edna S. MacGregor, 73

APRIL 28, 1935-OCT. 31, 2008

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Edna S. Wallis MacGregor, 73, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, of cancer.

Born April 28, 1935, in Lynn, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Elbridge and Emma Bradstreet Wallis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton MacGregor.

Most recently, she was an attendant for Carbaugh Coin Laundry.

She was a volunteer for Relay for Life.

She is survived by one son, Barry MacGregor of Grande Prairie, Texas; two sisters, Barbara Walker of McConnellsburg and Patricia Teague of Lynn, Mass.; two brothers, George Wallis of Lynn and Luther Wallis of Lakeville, Mass.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Twitchell; and one brother, Elbridge Wallis Jr.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

At her request, there will be no visitation.

Terry L. Rohrer, 68

-NOV. 4, 2008

HILLIARD, Ohio - Terry Lee Rohrer, 68, of Hilliard, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, of cancer.

He was the son of the late William and Isabel Rohrer.

He retired in 1995 from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel, after serving 32 years. Following his retirement, he served for seven years as a finance officer for the U.S. Air Force 907 Tactical Airlift Group, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Peggy; two children, Colin Rohrer and Tiffany Kuck; one brother, Philip Rohrer; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ohio. Pastors Larry Baker and Matt Cox will officiate. Burial will be in Alton Cemetery, Galloway, Ohio, with military honors.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tidd Funeral Home in Hilliard.

William B. Hunter, 78

JULY 10, 1930-NOV. 4, 2008

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - William B. "Junior" Hunter, 78, of 5352 Buchanan Trail East, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at his home, the result of a farming accident.

Born July 10, 1930, in Summerville, Ga., he was the son of the late Willie D. and Maggie M. Brown Hunter.

He attended school in Summerville.

He was employed as supervisor of the Roofing Department of Hess Manufacturing Co. in Quincy, Pa., retiring in 1992 after 35 years of service.

He was a member of Appaloosa Horse Club, Quarter Horse Club, and Paint and Pinto Horse Association.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce K. Wagaman Hunter, whom he married April 3, 1954; two daughters, Jo Ann Hunter-Davis of Waynesboro and Wendy M. Springer of Chambersburg, Pa.; four sons, LeRoy D. Hunter, Curtis W. Hunter, Jeffrey L. Hunter and Michael W. Hunter, all of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Annabelle Baker and Tiny B. Reynolds; and one brother, Jay G. Hunter.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro. The Rev. Daniel E. Cluck will officiate. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.


Martha G. McSherry, 90

SEPT. 23, 1918-NOV. 5, 2008

ROUZERVILLE, Pa. - Martha G. "Mike" Green McSherry, 90, of 13228 Walnut St., died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at her home.

Born Sept. 23, 1918, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Geneva A. Wagaman Green.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin L. "Mac" McSherry, in 1997. They were married Sept. 21, 1935.

She attended Waynesboro High School.

She was a nurse's aide at Waynesboro Hospital.

She was a member of Rouzerville United Methodist Church.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by one son, Danny L. McSherry of Waynesboro; one brother, Sam Green of Gettysburg, Pa.; two granddaughters, Amy Socks of Waynesboro and Missy Horst of Rouzerville, Pa.; two great-grandsons; nieces; and nephews, including David C. Green Jr., whom she raised.

She was preceded in death by one son, Melvin E. McSherry.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro. The Rev. Janet Comings will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

George E. Walter Jr., 70

JULY 12, 1938-NOV. 4, 2008

FUNKSTOWN - George Edward Walter Jr., 70, of Funkstown, Md., and formerly of Marigold Avenue, Cumberland, Md., went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born July 12, 1938, in Olney, Md., he was the son of the late George Edward Walter Sr. and Mildred Grogan Walter. He was also preceded in death by his second wife of 20 years, Carol Wade Walter.

Mr. Walter retired from the insurance business after 35 years of service at Woodmen of the World and Home Mutual Insurance Companies. He served our country during the Suez Crisis and was stationed in England with the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960.

He was raised in Catholicism and baptized as a member of Willowbrook SDA Church, Boonsboro.

Surviving are one daughter, Teresa L. Doudna; one son, Daniel E. Walter; first wife, Nancy Walter Freese and husband, Lowell, all of Hagerstown; Carol's children, Paul Wade and wife, Susan, John Wade and fiance, Deanie Smith, Michael Wade and wife, Mindy, Mary Welsh and Patrick Greise, and Daniel Wade and wife, Sabrina; 23 grandchildren; and two brothers, William C. Walter and Timothy D. Walter.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy., Cresaptown, Md. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.

At Mr. Walter's request, his body will be cremated. Inurnment will be held at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Raymond F. Purnell Sr., 74

-NOV. 3, 2008

FREDERICK, Md. - Raymond Frederick Purnell Sr., 74, well-known retired X-ray technologist from Frederick Memorial Hospital, passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at Homewood at Crumland Farms. He is survived by Shirley G. Purnell, his wife of 45 years.

Born at home in Big Pool, Md., he was the son of the late Raymond Albert Purnell and Maude Ramona Clark Purnell. He lived in Big Pool, Hancock and Hagerstown, Md. prior to moving to Frederick, Md., in 1966.

After high school, Fred was employed with Fairchild Aircraft Industries prior to entering the U.S. Air Force in 1954. He received his basic training at Samson Air Force Base in Geneva, N.Y., and after serving two years in Anchorage, Alaska, he received an honorable discharge at Langley Air Force Base, Va., in 1958.

While in the service, he trained as a radiation technologist, which became his lifelong career. He worked with Drs. Reid, Campbell, Ahmadian and Thompson at the Radiology Center at the Frederick Medical Center, and retired from Frederick Memorial Hospital in 1998 after a career of 42 years as an X-ray technician.

Fred was a member of Emmanuel United Brethren Church in Hagerstown, prior to moving to Frederick. He was a member of the Maryland Society of Radiologist Technologists, Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown, Md., and the Frederick AMVETS Post 0002.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Raymond Frederick Purnell Jr. of Frederick. The last remaining survivor of his immediate family, Fred was preceded in death by five sisters, E. Leona Floyd, Madeline B. Greenspoon, M. Lucille Zimmerman, Anna K. Hill and Ruth O. Snyder. He is also survived by three nephews, Richard M. Floyd and wife, Virigina, Dennis M. Hill and wife, Barbara, and Michael P. Zimmerman and wife, Sandra; two nieces, Linda F. English and husband, Scott, and Donna Wieland. He is also survived by great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews. He will also be remembered by his lifelong friend, Dr. John (Jack) Morton, formerly of Hagerstown and presently of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and James Lefever, formerly of Hagerstown and presently of Tarpon Springs, Fla. He is also remembered by his U.S. Air Force buddy, Fleetwood Ballance of Columbia, S.C.; and his very dear and devoted friend, Rose Myers of Frederick.

The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home on Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Friday, Nov. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. with funeral services immediately following. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. There will be a reception following the graveside services at Homewood at Crumland Farms, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, MD 21702.

Pallbearers will be Richard M. Floyd, Michael P. Zimmerman, Philip G. Stevens Jr., Scott V.B. English, Daniel M. Long and Jack Morton. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784 or to a charity of one's choice.

Born March 18, 1919, in Millville, she was the daughter of the late Moss Ranalli and Essie Longerbeam Ranalli.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson R. Whittington.

She retired from National Geographic in Shady Grove, Md.

She was a member of Bolivar Pentecostal Church.

She is survived by three sisters, Honey Nicewarner, Hazel Minnick and Dorothy Wilt; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert E. Whittington; one sister, Louise Turner; and two brothers, Frank Ranalli and Freddie Ranalli Sr.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Bolivar Pentecostal Church. The Rev. B. G. Turner will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Mary Lou Chrisman, 63, of Shenandoah Junction, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

Born March 22, 1945, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Paul Milburn and Della Welch Milburn.

She retired from Knott Nursing Home in Charles Town, W.Va.

She was a member of Shenandoah Bible Baptist Church in Martinsburg, W.Va.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Garland "Brownie" Chrisman; two daughters, Kimberly Wolfe of Shenandoah Junction and Diane Mowery of Charles Town; two sons, Garland Chrisman Jr. of Ranson, W.Va., and James Chrisman of Shenandoah Junction; three sisters, Catherine Combs, Shirley Robinson and Linda Housden; two brothers, Jim Milburn and Charles Milburn; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Milburn Jr. and Allen Milburn.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry. Pastor Mike Bagent will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery.

Cynthia A. Fritz, 50

Cynthia Anne Barnhart Fritz, 50, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in Hagerstown.

Born July 27, 1958, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of Matilda Anne Hudgins Hawks of Hagerstown and the late Howard H. Barnhart Jr.

She is survived by one daughter, Neysa D. Nguyen of Hagerstown; one son, Greg L. Dixon Jr. and wife, Greta J., of Hagerstown; one sister, Mary E. Barnhart; and dearest friend, Stacia S. Roberts of Williamsport, Md.; one brother, C. Allen Shatzer and wife, Susan L., of Taneytown, Md.; three grandchildren, Che I. Swayne, Ariel Dixon and Dylan Dixon, all of Hagerstown; stepfather, Albert D. Hawks Sr. of Hagerstown; and her dear friend, Shaun Harris of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Lewis A. Shatzer.

She had a career as a registered nurse, and was very compassionate towards many. She will be missed dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Pastor Mark Chapman will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Leroy Fred "Sonny" Thomas, 69, of 10632 Coral Ridge Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at his home.

Born May 21, 1939, in Greencastle, Pa., he was the son of the late Wilbur Roswell and Madeline Gelsinger Thomas.

He attended the former Brown's Mill School.

He was employed as a welder by Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove, Pa., for 38 years, retiring in 2000.

He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Chambersburg, Pa., and was active with the Royal Rangers.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bowman Thomas, whom he married Jan. 19, 1957; six children, the Rev. James L. Thomas, Rodney E. Thomas and Laure A. Putt, all of Chambersburg, Diana M. Dick of Waynesboro, Pa., Barry L. Thomas of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and Richard A. Thomas of Newville, Pa.; one sister, Catherine Gehrett of Shippensburg, Pa.; three brothers, John G. Davis of Greencastle, David Thomas of Hanover, Pa., and Charles L. Thomas of Florida; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris J. Thomas; and one brother, Dennis Thomas.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God in Chambersburg. The Rev. Garry Kipe will officiate.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg and Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the church.
