Mary Jane Thomas

Mary Jane Thomas, 81, of Hagerstown, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 11, 1922, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry I. and Frances N. Thomas.

She was an assembler and worked for ARC of Washington County.

She was a former member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Hagerstown.

She is survived by one sister, Ruth L. Custer of Vero Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Rohrer; and one brother, Harry W. Thomas.

Services will be private.

There will be no viewing.

Goldie V. Thomas

Goldie V. Thomas, 86, formerly of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1916, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Bessie E. Allder Thomas.

She is survived by one sister, Edna J. Stotler of Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Frances V. Ebersole; and four brothers, Fred R. Thomas, William E. Thomas, Charles E. Thomas and Norman Thomas.

Graveside services will be Monday at 10 am. at Greenlawn Cemetery, Williamsport. Evangelist Casey R. Strunk will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, North Potomac Street, Hagerstown.


Janet L. Moore

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Janet Lee Moore, 49, of 12 S. Virginia Ave., died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy, Md.

Born July 1, 1953, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Clarence and Florence Harpold Dean of Kearneysville, W.Va.

She was employed by Weinschel Corp. in Frederick, Md.

She was an EMT and a member of Brunswick Volunteer Ambulance Co.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Fred A. Moore Jr.; two daughters, Toni Baker of Harpers Ferry, W.Va. and Tiffani Moore of Brunswick, Md.; two sons, Billy D. Harrison II of Kearneysville and Shaun Harrison of Thurmont, Md.; three sisters, Kim Nichols of Kearneysville, Tami McDonald of Martinsburg, W.Va. and Terri Magers of Hagerstown; two brothers, Henry Dean of Kearneysville and Clark Dean of Hagerstown; maternal grandmother, Drewey Harpold of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, Brunswick. The Revs. Henry Dean and George Harpold will officiate. Burial will be in Samples Manor Cemetery, Samples Manor, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 9 a.m.

Jason E. Mayne Jr.

Jason Edward Mayne Jr., 11 months, of 12103 Thistle Court, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 3, 2002, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of Lori Ann and Jason Edward Mayne Sr. of Hagerstown.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Cheyenne D. Matlock, at home; maternal grandparents, Michael A. and Georgeanna M. Crim of Keedysville; paternal grandparents, Thomas B. and Kathleen M. Mayne of Mount Airy, Md.; great-grandparents, Earl L. and Nina V. Foreman of Frederick; great-grandmothers, Catherine R. Frebert of Englewood, Fla. and Lucille L. Mayne of Mount Airy; five aunts; five uncles and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.


Edward M. Whiteside

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Edward Malcolm Whiteside, 49, of Warfordsburg, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at his home.

Born Oct. 5, 1953, in Bedford, Pa., he was the son of William Edward and Betty Louise Means Whiteside of Warfordsburg.

He was a 1971 graduate of Southern Fulton High School in Warfordsburg and attended the University of Maryland at College Park.

He worked as an aircraft configuration manager with the Department of Defense, U.S. Navy, NAVAIR in Patuxent River, Md.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Whips Cove United Church of Christ in Warfordsburg.

He was a member of Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post 26 of Hancock and was past commander of Arick Lore Post 274 of Lusby, Md.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ann Wilson Whiteside; four daughters, Meredith M. Hendershot and Kristina E. Whiteside, both of Warfordsburg, Amy B. Damoulakis of Urbana, Md. and Samantha A. Reardon of Waldorf, Md.; two brothers, David M. Whiteside and William C. Whiteside, both of Warfordsburg; two grandchildren; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews and cousins.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Whips Cove United Church of Christ, Warfordsburg. Pastors Paul Bender and Jerry Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and Saturday at 10 a.m. at the church. The funeral home will open today at 11 a.m.

Aileen R. Stine

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Aileen R. Hess Stine, 93, of 220 Harrison Ave., died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at her home.

Born April 19, 1910, near Wayne Heights, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Elsie Gardenhour Hess.

She attended Quincy Township schools.

She worked as a clerk at McCrory's Department store in Waynesboro until retiring in 1973 after nearly 20 years.

She was a member of Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church in Waynesboro, Ladies Aide and Women's Missionary Society and taught Sunday school.

She was a member of Zullinger Homemakers, National AARP, volunteered at Piney Mountain Nursing Home, and was a former member of North Chapter AARP.

She is survived by her husband, John H. Stine, whom she married Nov. 10, 1928; two daughters, Jane M. Hawbaker of Carlisle, Pa. and Lois S. Abbott of Waynesboro; two sisters, Jean Spitzer of Alexandria, Va. and Dorothy Bonebrake of Abbottstown, Pa.; two grandsons; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Pearl McKenzie, Catherine Stover, Winona Wishard, Marie Chartrand and Leah B. Hoover; two brothers, J. Austin Hess and Melvin Hess; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church, Waynesboro. The Rev. Wilbert L. Sites and Pastor Bill Schuit will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Katherine I. Carbaugh

Katherine Irene Carbaugh, 85, of 811 Georgia Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 1, 1918, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Robert and Daisy Irene Shoemaker Snyder.

Her husband, John L. Carbaugh Sr., preceded her in death.

She was a member of Williamsport Assembly of God.

She is survived by one daughter, Genevieve Karn of Hagerstown; three sons, Harry Carbaugh and Gary Carbaugh, both of Hagerstown, and John Carbaugh Jr. of Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Larry E. Carbaugh; three sisters and four brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. Daniel A. Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


Delma M. Shankle

FREDERICK, Md. - Delma Mary Betts Shankle, 95, of 517 N. Market St., died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born March 23, 1908, in Mapleville, Md., she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Edith Witmer Betts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis D. Shankle, in 1985.

She and her husband owned and operated Shankle's Upholstery Shop.

She was a member of Frederick Church of the Brethren, attended and taught Sunday school, helped in the church kitchen and was past president and a member of the Ladies Guild.

She was past president and member of United Fire Co. of Frederick.

She is survived by five children, Charlotte I. Gaver of Frederick, Betty E. Sheffield of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Janice V. Draper, Rodney L. Shankle and Terry R. Shankle, all of Frederick; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Roger E. Shankle and Robert L. Shankle; and one grandson.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Frederick Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Paul Mundey will officiate. Burial will be in Myersville Lutheran Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick.

Eleanor A. Lofquist

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Eleanor Alabaugh Lofquist, 81, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at her home.

Born Oct. 6, 1921, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lester and Susan Dawson Alabaugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ernest Lofquist, in 1995.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Auxiliary 1483 and American Legion Post 60.

She is survived by one daughter, Suzanne D. Berry of Palm Coast, Fla.; one son, John T. Lofquist of Harrisonburg, Va.; one granddaughter, Marie S. Berry of Clinton, Md.; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jefferson Lofquist.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Sarah E. Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.


Sally B. Crabbe

INWOOD, W.Va. - Sally Bell Crabbe, 71, of Inwood, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 12, 1932, in Jordan Run, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Victor Adam and Dovie Clara Rorhbaugh.

She was a member of Independent Bible Church.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Donald Clifford Crabbe; one daughter, Lisa A. Marlowe of Martinsburg; one brother, Harold Rorhbaugh of Maysville, W.Va.; three sisters, Ruby Smootz of New Creek, W.Va., Dolly Caldwell of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Mary Mongold of Petersburg, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Feaster; and four brothers, Tracy V., Olen A., Minor B. and Victor A. Rorhbaugh.

Services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastor Brent Alderman will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Omena J. Sheeder

SPRING RUN, Pa. - Omena Jane Parson Sheeder, 71, of 18225 Dry Run Road West, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at her home.

Born Dec. 5, 1931, in Three Springs, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy M. O'Donnell Sr. and Rebecca E. Meck O'Donnell.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jacob M. Parson, in 1965.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Spring Run Bible Church.

She is survived by her husband, Jack M. Sheeder, whom she married Sept. 24, 1966; five daughters, Judy Myers of Saltillo, Pa., Joyce Cobern of Greencastle, Pa., Dena Hockenberry of Chambersburg, Pa., Helen Burger of Mercersburg, Pa.. and Samantha Stiffler of Fayetteville, Pa.; two sons, Brett Sheeder and Tim Sheeder, both of Greencastle; two sisters, Lula Parson and Faye Peterson, both of Spring Run; one brother, Richard O'Donnell of Dry Run, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, five brothers and two grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Spring Run Bible Church. Pastor John E. Semple will officiate. Burial will be in Upper Path Valley Cemetery, Dry Run.

Nacari Unique Jones, 10 months, of 531 Salem Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at her home.

Born July 20, 2002, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Shanita Roshell Jones.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sisters, Naukese S. Jones and Nakiya E. Jones, both of Hagerstown; maternal grandmother, Violet E. Jones of Hagerstown; great-grandmother, Bessie J. Hairston of Hagerstown; aunts; uncles and great-aunts.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Gary Mebane will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 4, 1908, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ordell and Katie A. Cushwa Hinton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Lemaster.

She was a member of Bedington United Methodist Church and attended Wesley Ivy Leaf Bible Class.

She was a member of Marlowe Home Demonstration Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Fannie A. Landis of Falling Waters and Cora M. Jones of Martinsburg; two sisters, Ruth Jackson and Gladys Yurish, both of Martinsburg; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Thomson and Ella R. Ellis; one son, Charles T. Lemaster; three sisters, Mary Rodgers, Carney Spiker and Catherine Hinton; three brothers, Rodger Hinton, Ray Hinton and Charles Hinton; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bedington United Methodist Church. The Revs. Robert W. Barnes, Walter F. Bowers and Dennis Jackman will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
