Authorities seeking man who fled after traffic stop
WASHINGTON COUNTY — Authorities from several police agencies helped search for a man who bailed out of a car after a deputy tried to pull him over Friday afternoon on U.S. 11.
Charles Crew, the man authorities believe was driving the car, is wanted on a warrant in Montgomery County, Md., charging him with theft, Investigator Greg Alton said Thursday afternoon.
The driver ran from the car after leading the Washington County Sheriff’s Department deputy through a quiet neighborhood north of town.
A woman who was a passenger in the car also ran from police but was taken into custody not long afterward.
Police said they believe the woman to be Rebecca Crew, Charles Crew’s wife, Alton said.
Rebecca Crew is wanted by Washington County authorities on a warrant, also related to theft charges, Alton said.
Investigators had been on the lookout for the car in connection with a string of retail thefts in the area, Alton said.
Deputy Casey Barnes on Friday afternoon saw the car on U.S. 11 northbound in the area of North Pointe Drive, he said. Barnes tried to make a traffic stop, but the car driven by the man police believe was Crew sped away, Alton said.
Barnes chased the man down Paradise Church Road and onto Woodhaven Drive. The car blew a tire during the chase and was seen traveling through the neighborhood with its left rear tire on only its rim, a witness said.
The car veered off the road and turned into a wide lawn in the 19100 block of Woodhaven Drive, said Mel Chupp, who was working in his yard in that area when he saw the chase.
The car came to rest behind a home near a large field, and the man and woman fled.
Witnesses said the woman was carrying a small white dog when she fled. She was taken into custody shortly afterward, Alton said.
Chupp said he jumped into his pickup truck and followed the chase.
“I knew it had to end soon,” because the car being chased was driving on a rim, he said.
The woman was led to an unmarked police vehicle parked in the 19100 block of Woodhaven Drive. Six other marked and unmarked police vehicles remained parked in the area Friday afternoon.
The car was towed from the scene Friday afternoon.
The Humane Society of Washington County was called to the scene to tend to the dog, which was taken to a veterinarian, spokeswoman Katherine Cooker said. A homeowner in the area caught the dog, and said it seemed hurt, she said.
The Humane Society will care for the dog, she said.
Michael Robison, who lives in the 19200 block of Woodhaven Drive, said he “just missed” seeing the vehicle being chased through his neighbor’s lawn, he said. Police were everywhere, running through the field behind his house, Robison said. A K-9 team went into the field, he said.
At one point, a helicopter flew overhead.
Robison said he planned to lock his doors while he mowed Friday evening.
“This is a really quiet neighborhood. I’ve never had to worry about that,” he said. “It seemed like the police responded really quickly. They were on it.”
The Crews are wanted in connection with retails thefts in the area, Alton said.
Police allege they were taking health and beauty products, including Crest whitening strips, over-the-counter medication and Oil of Olay products, Alton said.
