Man accused of setting another on fire free on $15K bond

A Sharpsburg man accused of setting another man on fire with lighter fluid in March has been charged with first- and second-degree assault, Maryland fire marshals said Friday.

Clayton Muller, 19, of 2806 Harpers Ferry Road, was also charged with reckless endangerment, according to Investigator Jason Mowbray.

Muller was released from custody after posting $15,000 bond, Mowbray said in a press release on Friday.

The March 15 incident occurred at Muller’s home as Muller, the victim and others were seated around an outdoor fireplace. Muller allegedly sprayed lighter fluid on the fireplace and then “trailed” it onto the victim’s upper body.

When fire engulfed the victim, a witness extinguished the flames but not before the victim sustained second-degree burns to his right arm, chest and face, Mowbray said.

The victim was taken by private vehicle to Washington County Hospital and later transferred to the Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore, where he remained for more than a week, Mowbray said.

After being released from Bayview, the victim returned home and continues to be treated for his burns, Mowbray said.
