Leaking fuel pipe discovered at Harpers Ferry park

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — Workers at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park are focused on cleanup and repairs after discovering a leaking heating-fuel line.

Park spokeswoman Marsha Wassel said the source of a fuel odor was found late Thursday. The pipe was beneath the concrete basement floor of the Marmion Row building, used to house seasonal workers.

Recent heavy rains had left the ground saturated, and as stormwater ran downhill from the building, it carried a trace amount of fuel into a drain.

Wassel said Friday there was no contamination of the Shenandoah River.

A 150-gallon trough was containing any residual fuel, and the pipe will be replaced, she said.

The Environmental Protection Agency will be in the park Monday to assess the hillside contamination and recommend a cleanup plan.
