Berkeley Springs hunter dies on opening day

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A West Virginia man has died of an apparent heart attack during opening day of the state’s buck gun season.

Division of Natural Resources spokesman Hoy Murphy said 73-year-old Berkeley Springs resident Curtis Lane Walker died while hunting in Morgan County just before noon Monday.

Murphy says Walker was hunting with his granddaughter near Berkeley Springs when he was stricken, but additional details were unavailable.

Walker was one of an estimated 280,000 West Virginians expected to hit the woods during buck gun season, which opened Monday in all counties except Logan, Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming.

Each hunter can bag two bucks through the season, which ends Dec. 5.
