Brash and belligerent, the third baseman was poster boy for the Orioles' plucky three-time National League champs of the 1890s. Later a Hall of Fame manager, McGraw shaved his bat for bunting, spit tobacco juice in umpires' faces and tripped runners rounding third. In 11 seasons here, he batted .336, with a high of .391. Sidelined by typhoid much of 1896, he returned in August, hit .325 and led the Orioles on a 16-2 run that clinched the pennant.
