Prep Softball
Making good between the lines

You just never know when prep athletes are going to mesh together and even exceed the prospectus in the minds of their coaches.
On Tuesday, got my first look at our No. 1 girls softball team as Hedgesville took on Martinsburg and won 3-2.
After the game, which was the 20th win for the Eagles, I asked coach Larry Laing if he thought this kind of season were possible at the beginning of the year.
“I thought maybe we’d be a year away. We had a goal of winning the Apple Valley and 20 games, but I really didn’t know. They have really come together,” said Laing, who broke the 20-win barrier for the first time in his 5th year at Hedgesville.
And, another team that has come together is one that falls into the same category.
Saw the South Hagerstown boys baseball team on Wednesday for the first time and the Rebels beat back a Smithsburg effort to win 6-3 and go to 9-0 in the MVAL and 11-1 overall.
“I think we were picked pretty far down down in the pre-season,” said coach Ralph Stottlemyre. “I wouldn’t have guessed at the beginning of the year we would be unbeaten in the league but we have a lot of players that have played as a team.”
South has some pitching front-to-back and they’ve got some lumber in the lineup.
It will be interesting to see what the Rebels do in the remaining weeks.
