Arleen Poitier wears a hoodie and holds a protest sign as thousands gathered in downtown Miami, April 1, demanding justice for Trayvon Martin, 17, during a rally that featured national civil rights leaders. The rally comes a day after thousands marched through Sanford, the Florida town where Martin was shot and killed in February. Protesters say they will continue holding marches and rallies until an arrest is made. (By The Associated Press / April 10, 2012) |
The special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin shooting case says she will make an announcement about the case within 72 hours.
In a statement released late Tuesday, Prosecutor Angela Corey didn’t specifically say what the announcement will be. She is deciding whether to charge George Zimmerman with a crime for fatally shooting the 17-year-old Martin.
The neighborhood watch volunteer says he was acting in self-defense when he shot the unarmed Martin on Feb. 26. Martin’s parents say Zimmerman attacked their son. The case has raised questions about racial profiling.
Martin was black; Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother is from Peru.
