One person was taken to the hospital following an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a car on Interstate 81 northbound just off the ramp from westbound I-70.
The accident happened when the driver of a Toyota Corolla lost control of the car as it was moving off the ramp from westbound I-70 onto northbound I-81, according to Trooper Butler of the Maryland State Police.
The Toyota crossed both lanes of I-81 and struck the guardrail in the median, and then was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer. The impact knocked the car back across the interstate lanes and into a grassy area off the interstate, Butler said.
The driver of the Toyota was taken to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown, according to Butler. The identity of the man who was driving the car was not immediately provided. He was the only occupant of the car, police said.
Interstate 81 northbound was closed following the 6:40 a.m. accident, but was reopened at 7:20 a.m.
There was a report of an earlier accident in that area, but that turned out not to be the case. Butler said authorities initially believed it was the first of two accidents had been called in with a slightly different location. But police learned that there was only one accident in the area, he said.
