BOONSBORO — Families with loved ones at Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village gave the facility high ratings for its quality of care, a 2012 state survey determined.
The annual polling of families affiliated with 224 Maryland nursing homes gave the Boonsboro facility other top marks as well.
On a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the best possible rating, Fahrney-Keedy residents’ families and caregivers gave the facility a nine for quality of care, while those at other homes gave them ratings averaging 8.3, according to the survey.
Overall care was one topic in a survey the Maryland Health Care Commission sent to families or other primary responsible parties of residents at state nursing homes. The questionnaire asked 25 questions about five aspects of a resident’s life and care. On a four-point scale, Fahrney-Keedy’s scores in each area, followed by the scores given statewide, are: Staff and administration, 3.8 to 3.7; care provided to residents, 3.7 to 3.5; food and meals, 3.6 to 3.5; autonomy and resident rights, 3.8 to 3.5; and physical aspects of the nursing home, 3.6 to 3.4.
To the question of whether they would recommend the facility to others, 98 percent of families/responsible parties surveyed said they would. This compares to 89 percent of families recommending other homes statewide, according to the survey.
The state’s survey included only families of residents who had been in their respective nursing homes for 90 days or more when the questionnaires were sent.

Jefferson Memorial Hospital
RANSON, W.Va. — When adult patients settle into their hospital rooms at West Virginia University Hospitals-East’s Jefferson Memorial Hospital, a tiny towel bunny holding a “Housekeeping Cares” lip balm is there to welcome them.
This gesture of hospitality earned the hospital’s environmental services department companywide recognition in Sodexo Health Care’s best practices award program. Sodexo, an organization that provides food and facilities management services to hospitals across the country, manages the environmental and food/nutrition services at Jefferson Memorial.
According to Joe Smith, district manager for Sodexo Health Care, the best-practices program began out of a grass-roots effort of managers wanting to share their experiences to help fellow managers within the Sodexo organization.
Since Jefferson Memorial Hospital started offering “boo boo bunnies” more than a year ago, patient satisfaction scores have increased.
