When Perrin Wells' daughter, Maya, came home with a clothing drive announcement from Bester Elementary School, she was eager to volunteer.
Wells got her employer, Larry & Sons Inc., involved.
Bester Elementary, in conjunction with other Washington County Public Schools, conducted a clothing drive from March 8 to 18 to benefit Children In Need, a nonprofit organization in Hagerstown.
By involving her employer, Wells was able to collect more than 200 pounds of miscellaneous clothing to benefit children and families in the community.
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad reported a 22 percent ridership increase last year.
The Cumberland Times-News reported recently that the numbers were included in the railroad's recent budget request to the Allegany County Commissioners.
Superintendent Frank Fowler said the steam-driven tourist train carried more than 38,000 passengers in calendar year 2010.
He said the railroad will face an unusual expense of about $400,000 in 2015 to repair or replace the boiler on its 95-year-old Baldwin locomotive.
The 1916 steam engine pulls the train on 32-mile round trips between Cumberland and Frostburg, Md.
