Dr. Howard L. Kaufman, cancer program director, Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Howard L. Kaufman joined Rush University Medical Center in the newly created role of Rush Cancer Program director and associate dean. As cancer program director, Kaufman is responsible for the strategic planning process and execution, and leads the development and refinement of cancer programs at Rush.

Kaufman comes to Rush from Columbia University in New York City where he was chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and director of the Columbia Melanoma Center. He previously served a term as associate director of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia, and chaired the oncology service line at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Kaufman completed fellowships in Tumor Immunology and Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute.

Kaufman received his BS from the University of Illinois and his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine. His current primary research interest is in melanoma tumor vaccines and cancer immunotherapy.
