Washington County Public Schools’ students and teachers will get more than a full week off for spring break next school year as a result of changes to the proposed school calendar.
The Washington County Board of Education unanimously approved calendars for the next two school years during its Feb. 19 meeting, according to a video of the meeting.
The board had asked the Calendar Committee to take another look at the proposed 2013-2014 calendar because it had long weekends for students in March and April 2014, but not a full week off for spring break.
The four-day March weekend remains, due to professional development for employees, and schools will be closed the week of April 14, 2014, and the following Monday, due to the Easter holiday, according to a copy of the calendar.
To provide a week off for spring break, the number of built-in days for inclement weather was reduced from eight to five, Deputy Schools Superintendent Boyd Michael told the board.
For the 2013-2014 school year, the first day of school is Aug. 21 and the tentative last day is June 12, 2014. If there are no inclement weather days, the last school day is June 5, 2014.
For the 2014-2015 school year, the first day of school is Aug. 20, 2014, and the tentative last day is June 11, 2015. If there are no inclement weather days, the last school day will be June 4, 2015.
