Four Eastern Panhandle schools recognized as 'exemplary'

West Virginia education officials are honoring 58 schools across the state, including four in the Eastern Panhandle, for the highest level of recognition.

Officials with the Office of Education Performance Audits say the exemplary status given to the schools is the gold standard of educational achievement.


The schools honored Thursday, which included Inwood Primary School in Berkeley County and C.W. Shipley Elementary, Driswood Elementary and Shepherdstown Elementary schools in Jefferson County, met a set of rigorous standards on proficiency tests, student attendance and other measures. They included elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and career technical centers and programs.

“We are very proud of our three exemplary schools,” Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Susan Wall said in a statement Friday.

“The students, teachers, staff, and principal have worked very hard in those schools to achieve this honor.”

Manny P. Arvon, Wall’s counterpart in Berkeley County, said the recognition for Inwood Primary was an “exceptional honor.”

“We are proud of the academic accomplishments of this school,” Arvon said in statement released by spokesperson Leah Daniel.

“We salute the outstanding efforts of the students, teachers, and administrators.”
