St. Maria Goretti High School announced that its Positivity Club and Varsity Club collaborated to raise $216 for the American Cancer Society during National Sneakers Day and Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Weekend.

Students donated toward the cause and, in turn, had the chance to wear sneakers to school on National Sneakers Day, which was Jan. 27.

Students also collected donations from those who attended the school’s home basketball games that weekend.

Goretti’s basketball coaches showed their support by wearing sneakers with their suits at each of the games over Coaches vs. Cancer weekend.

Amrit Rayfield, Goretti’s boys basketball coach, expressed the positive impact that students and the community can make toward this nationwide effort.

“It was great to see all of the support for this cause from our students, coaches and the crowds at last weekend’s games,” Rayfield said. “It truly shows the difference that can be made by joining forces in the fight against cancer.”

The Positivity Club and the Varsity Club focus on community service-related projects throughout the year.

The mission of Goretti’s Positivity Club is to promote kindness and peer support, along with awareness about community service. Varsity Club members are students who have earned varsity letters in athletics during the previous school year and are members of a varsity team during the current school year.
