Michael Donmoyer, son of Roger and Beth Donmoyer of Hagerstown, was the class valedictorian. Col. Peter Tan presented Michael with a full scholarship to West Point, where he will be majoring in international relations and Chinese.
Michael served as student council president during his senior year, participated in three missions trips and was a member of the National Honor Society. Michael challenged his classmates to take a stand for their Christian faith and to step out and make a difference. He encouraged them to do this saying, “Don’t rely on anyone else to make a difference; make it yourself.”
Bryce Boyd, son of James and Susan Boyd of Hagerstown, was the salutatorian. Bryce will be majoring in computer science and industrial engineering at the University of Southern California. Bryce was a member of the National Honor Society, served as Key Club treasurer and has been involved in numerous speech competitions throughout high school.
Bryce reminded his fellow graduates of the friendships they have made that might not have been possible in a larger school. He also reminded them that as they leave high school, “Heritage's influence will literally stretch across the country.”
During the ceremony, students were recognized for academic achievements, exemplary conduct and community service. Several special awards were presented.
Jacob Kelley, son of Doug and Carol Kelley Carbaugh of Hagerstown, received the Vimont award and scholarship given in honor of the first headmaster of the school. The award is presented in recognition of Christ-like character and a servant’s heart.
Peter Therrien and Adam Tresler were recognized for their leadership as co-editors of the school newspaper.
Rachel Clarke received the Journalist of the Year Award for her contribution to the journalism department as editor of the Conqueror, the school yearbook.
The 2012 Conqueror dedication was made to Christine Tresler for her service heading up the school cafeteria for the past 14 years.
Jessica Gaylor received the Asaph Award, named after a writer of many of the psalms in the Bible. The award is given to the student who has actively participated in the school’s music program all four years of high school.
Donald Hetzer from the Mercersburg, Pa., VFW presented Stephen Brewer with a scholarship for his Voice of Democracy essay “Is There Pride in Serving in the Military?”
Brenda Gardinier presented a scholarship from Whitetail Resort to Chad Lowry.
Eight graduates have attended Heritage since they were in kindergarten: Callie Butts, Rachel Clarke, Michael Donmoyer, Jessica Gaylor, Kathleen Kidd, Chad Lowry, Rob Martin and Adam Tresler.
Five members of the Class of 2012 are the children of former Heritage graduates. Stephen Brewer, Jessica Gaylor, Rob Martin, Christian Strickler and Adam Tresler each had a parent graduate between 1982 and 1990.
The speaker for the event was Pastor Brad Nigh, who encouraged the graduates to be the leaders that God has called them to be.
He reminded them that many of them have already served in positions of leadership in the school and have been examples to younger students. He challenged them to follow the example of leadership exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, senior class president Jessica Gaylor presented Ben Cosner, the junior class president, with a lighted candle symbolizing the transferring of the student leadership to the Class of 2013.
