A total of 43 schools will participate in the 56th annual State High School One-Act Play Festival today through Saturday at the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

The festival, sponsored by the South Dakota High School Activities Association, is the state tournament for high school drama competition.

Among the schools participating will be Aberdeen Central and Roncalli, Rosholt, Selby Area and Timber Lake.

Three of those schools will stage their plays today. Roncalli students will present “The Crucible” at 11:45 a.m. That show will be followed by Rosholt's production of “Smarty Pants” at 12:30 p.m.

Tonight at 6, Central students will present “The Drowsy Chaperone

Selby Area's version of “Bad Auditions for Bad Actors” is set for 1:15 p.m. Friday. Timber Lake presents “Mmmbeth” at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The 2012 State One-Act Play Festival will showcase performances by 14 Class A schools presenting plays that are serious in nature and 14 Class B plays that are humorous. The plays presented by the Class AA schools may be serious or humorous.

Each school will perform its play for the public and a panel of three judges. Awards presented at the festival will include overall superior plays, outstanding performers and outstanding ensembles.

Rosholt will be participating in the One-Act Play Festival for the first time since 2007. “Smarty Pants” was written by Bradley Hayward. The show is directed by David Brandell.

Selby Area was also last at the state festival in 2007. “Bad Auditions by Bad Actors” is directed by Sam Glantzow.

Roncalli's play, written by Arthur Miller, is directed by Steph Litzen.

The Central play is directed by Roger McCafferty.

All performances are free to the public. New performances will begin about every 45 minutes throughout each day.

The awards will be presented about 5 p.m. Saturday. A listing of all performance times may be found on the SDHSAA website, http://www.sdhsaa.com. The awards will be posted on the SDHSAA website as soon as possible following the announcement of results on Saturday.

The Class AA judges will be J.D. Ackman of South Dakota State University, Anne Rathbun of Fort Pierre and Jim Walker of Aberdeen Community Theatre.

The Class A judges are Michael Pangburn of Pierre, Ray Peterson of South Dakota State University and Daniel Yurgaitis of Northern State University. Class B judges are Kevin Brick and Rosella Blunk, both of Sioux Falls, and Daniel Miller of Dakota Wesleyan University.
