I just downloaded Mozilla. I have to say I am really impressed! It's kinda like the old version (4.76) of Netscape, but much speedier.
Prior to that it was Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6. I dabbled with Opera some, but it could never really grab my attention.
What else does everyone use? MSIE, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, AOL, other?
And how happy are you with the browser you use?
(Essays of less than 100 words will be due on my desk in the morning.

I use IE 6, though I have been thinking about tinkering with other browsers. I used to use Netscape all the time but it was too slow and I had too many problems with it.

IE 6 here as well. Have yet to use Mozilla but hear good things about it.

Romulus (and others) you really should give Mozilla a try. It's a pretty hefty download at 11 megs but, I think, well worth the effort. I was really impressed with the speed of loading web pages; probably a 50-100% increase over MSIE6. I'm even giving the mail client a go.
Once you start using it you'll probably wonder what the heck is netscape doing here. But, it really goes beyond Netscape in it's speed.

Good to hear that Romulus (about Mozilla). Takes some getting used to after years of using IE. Did you also check out the cookie manager?

Well it has been a few days since I started using Mozilla and I dont know why I've been using IE all this time!! Mozilla is fantastic! The downloads are easier to keep track of and the images from sites seem to DL alot smoother and quicker. All and all this is truely becoming a favorite of mine , Thanks for the tip Yoss.
Ps. Yeah the cookie manager is nice, different but I like it... Favorite is the pop-up blocker, I have yet to see a pop up!!!!

Holy freakin crap. I just downloaded Firefox this morning for the heck of it. I've been hearing geeks everywhere raving about it forever, but never got around to trying it. Somebody smack me for not trying it sooner. Some of the extensions you can download do amazing things to make your life easier. And tabbed browsing makes me giddy.
Adios, IE6!

I've been using Opera for a couple years now, and I'm glad they updated it over the summer... it's much easier to use now.

And with the FasterFox extension the H-F forum is actually bearable.
Now I just need to find a spell check extension or add the Google toolbar that has it.

CORRECTION: Fasterfox doesn't help

Yeah, I downloaded FasterFox and about all it does is give me visual confirmation with the little timer of how long some pages take.
As far as extensions, I have Google toolbar, DownThemAll (it downloads all the pics, movies, files from the page at once), and 1-Click Weather. What other extensions are cool?

I see that IE 7 is now available for public (beta) download. Microsoft finally gets tabbed browsing. Anybody try it yet?

I don't load Microsoft beta's on my pc's. Tends to screw things up a tad.
The tech rags (information technology journals) are at most mediocre about IE7. Seems that most of the security features are only implemented when using the new windows Vista (still a year out from release and only works on 64bit systems). Plus some other general dislikes about it.

There is a 32-bit version as well as a 64-bit version of Vista, both to be released later this year.
Do you really think MS would spend that kind of time and $ and not have a version to run on the most popular platform out there?
Yossarian
Feb 2 2006, 12:13 PM
Well, yes, yes I do think MS would do that.

only if they sold 64-bit processors. hmmm. does MS have any stock in INTEL or AMD?

I have been playing around with the Portable Apps version of Firefox (and GAIM im). They fit on a USB thumb drive and you take it anywhere (school, library, work) and when you use the browser it leaves no trace of your web browsing (no cookies, etc.) on the PC you use it on. The only "forensic" evidence left are several registry edits that point to the thumb drive as a connected device.
Not that I have anything to hide, but its nice to use someone elses PC and not muck it up with my browsing history. It also has all my bookmarks and browser extensions on it so its just like using my home PC.

HFC, CPD! I had no idea you could run Firefox from a thumb drive. I've been playing around with this and it's quite cool.
Couple 'o questions:
- Are you saying that doing this even keeps the network administrator from being able to tell where you've surfed, even with monitoring/site blocking software on the network?
- I take it your surf history is being written to the thumb drive (I can see it blinking while I'm surfing) and the amount of space used on your drive will increase? If so, this could be my excuse for going from my puny 128MB drive to a 1 or 2 GB mother ship.

No, the network router, firewall, ISA logs etc. still will be working and recording the info it was setup to record so you are not completely invisible.
My 128MB works fine, but I have my History limited to 4 days and cache set to 10MB.
Try it and have fun.

We have had people here at work think if they wipe out their browser cache locally then we can't see what they are surfing, but of course they are wrong because we have a network appliance that logs what they are doing and tries to block the bad stuff. Here is the link to it:
http://www.cymphonix.com/Cymphonix_Product...000_Details.phpI installed IE7 on my laptop to test, but I mostly have been using Firefox. IE7 is nice with the tabbed browsing and I have it configured when I click on a link to open a new page I have it open a new tab instead. Though the user interface is kind of confusing, especially if you are used to IE6 so you have to search around for everything because the naviagation buttons are not in a row like it used to be
