What NEW music has everyone been listening to lately?

I have just found a few bands that strike my interest. These reviews are my opinions and I do not expect you to agree or hold me responsible for you hating these bands.

Band: Keane
Album: Hopes and Fears
Style: Contemporary alternative rock (if that's a genre). They have a very interesting and unique sound. It is not like the usual upbeat alt rock music I normally prefer. They have a soft sound, but it works. I believe they are an English-born band.
-I'd recommend to download some songs or take a listen at the local music store
http://www.keanemusic.com/

Band: The Used
Album: In Love and Death
Style: Modern punk. After buying their first album and being greatly disappointed at the annoying nonstop screaming and meaningless lyrics, I hesistantly borrowed this from a friend the other day. It seems like this band has grown up and improved their sound a bit, but I doubt it's quite the style anyone here prefers. There may be some adult language in a song or two, if that decides what you listen to.
-I'd recommend taking a listen to a few songs, and then flame away
http://www.theused.net/

Band: Vanessa Carlton
Album: Harmonium
Style: Contemporary adult. I heard previews for this album on my plane back from France and hated to admit that I loved her music. Her voice is a little different than most of what's on the radio and I guess that's what drew me in.
-I'd recommend picking up this album, the songs are still stuck in my head as much as I don't want to admit it.

Band: Jimmy Eat World
Album: Futures
Style: Post-punk, alternative rock. I bought this CD while in France and it definitely has one of the best sounds of the CDs I've bought in recent years. This band writes good music and performs equally as well. They are a bit strange live, however.
-I'd again recommend a purchase of this album.

I bought my wife the Vanessa Carlton CD for Christmas. Pretty good for girly music. I like the new Jimmy Eat World song, but haven't had a chance to preview the album.

I have nothing new to add, but keep the reviews coming. I have a bunch of free iTunes download codes I won from underneath Pepsi bottle caps and need some ideas.

[Shameless request] If anybody drinks 20 oz. Pepsi products and scores a free song download code under the cap, I'd be interested in snatching up the code if you're not going to use it.[/Shameless reqeust]
YeomanWeller
I've been lucky....people from work have been giving me pepsi iTunes caps. Has anyone listend to the album, Final Straw, by Snow Patrol ??? I think it is really good, give it a listen. Also, check out Hot Fuss by The Killers.
AerialBurke
That's nice how you classify me as "people from work". Just about how many itunes caps were given to you by your "friends" or should I say "a single friend" at work ?
Idiot

Is that what those numbers inside the caps are? I've probably thrown away a dozen.

You're more than welcome to them from now on.

Calm Down !!!! Other members of the team have passed along some caps too.

Just got the new Judas Priest yesterday. Rob Halford is back and it is their best effort in years !!!
SMan
Priest is still making music??

I picked up the Jimmy Eat World that Biggins mentioned above. Pretty good.

I'm listening to the new 3 Doors Down right now. I'm about half way through it and all the songs are good, but nothing great yet.

Oh, make it stop. I can't believe it's any good. I have respect for Halford and Judas Priest, but is the music the same as it was 15 years ago? I haven't heard it. I cringe at thought of them making the same songs over and over again.

I recently bought some Prince stuff off my backlog and have been rolling around in it like a pig in filth for the past month. "Anna Stesia come to me. Talk to me. Ravish me. Liberate my mind." smile.gif

I'm still p#ssed that I bought the single CD of Marilyn Manson's Lest We Forget instead of the CD with bonus DVD of videos. Anyone know how I could finaggle a copy without resorting to buying the whole package since I already have the CD? Help a sister out.
YeomanWeller
The new 3 Doors Down isn't bad.......not great, but if you like their past albums, you'll probably like this one. Rolling Stone didn't give it a very good review, but I usually don't agree with their opinions anyway.

Heather, I know it's hard to believe, but the new Priest is very good !!! I made the same mistake you did with the Manson cd and now I regret it.

So, is the Priest stuff any fresher or is it still trying to be old school?

Someone burn me those Manson videos! mad.gif Angry with myself.

It's got the Priest sound but it's not a rehash of the old stuff. It's a lot better than most of the stuff that is passing for metal these days.

You're 41 years old, Yeoman? You sure that's not a fib?

I saw Trent Reznor's house in New Orleans! Woo! Took pictures of his trash cans and windows. ph34r.gif

Yes Heather, I am 41......but I'm told by plenty of people that I still have the mindset of someone much younger !!!! Music has always been my passion and I love all types. Hope you can check out some of the bands I mentioned above.....but I have a feeling you probably already know a lot of them !!!

I can only imagine Trent's house.......I saw Nine Inch Nails on one of the early Lollapalooza tours and they were great !!!

Nope, I love listening to NIN and a little A Perfect Circle. I've heard of Slunt, Robyn Hitchcock and New Order, but I wouldn't recognize them if I heard them.

Meh, Trent's house blended in with the rest of the neighborhood. I knew about where it was, but wasn't sure which exact house it was until a tour passed by and this old tourguide lady said something along the lines of, "...and this is some rock and roll guy's house, if anyone cares." biggrin.gif

My music taste runs from one extreme to another...from country to gospel to rock and rap. Lately I've really been into the new Green Day...American Idiot. I've always like them, and was a little afraid that this new one wouldn't measure up. But it's great!

I love Boulevard of Broken Dreams, but I detest American Idiot. Political songs give me the poops these days. biggrin.gif

I just downloaded a few Franz Ferdinand songs after I couldn't get that song "Take Me Out" out of my head. That's the song they play during that Playstation Portable commercial that runs every 7 minutes.

I love that song! I'll be jammin' in my car and singing when that comes on. Jerking my head around like back in the 80s.

I would never download it though. They play it enough on the radio.

I've been in a sad mood lately though so I've been cycling through some sad songs: Tori Amos - Playboy Mommy, Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over, Naked Eyes - Always Somethin' There to Remind Me, the gut-wrenching Billy Holiday song - I'll Be Seeing You (from the Notebook), Des'ree - Kissing You, and tons of sad Prince songs. sad.gif

I have a bunch of free iTunes downloads I've collected off of Pepsi bottles. They expire soon, so it's use it or lose it. Keep the music recommendations coming.

I love that Crowded House song. It reminds me of a John Hughes movie. smile.gif
Heather
Did you know you can listen to snippets of songs on amazon? If you aren't sure you'll like it enough to download or buy, check there. They have samples of most track listings for anything.

Stuff on my WinMX or stuff I've listened to recently:

Rolling Stones - Fool to Cry, Emotional Rescue
Alicia Keys - If I Aint Got You
Ani DiFranco - Untouchable Face
Foo Fighters - Darlin' Nikki (cover), Hero, Learn to Fly
A Perfect Circle - Brena
Republica - Drop Dead Gorgeous
Elton John - Burn Down the Mission, well - anything Elton is good.
INXS - Listen Like Thieves, the whole KICK album, Elegently Wasted
Cinderella - Hot and Bothered, Shelter Me, all of Long Cold Winter

Yeah I said Cinderella. And I have NO SHAME. biggrin.gif

Garbage - #1 Crush
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979, Ava Adore
Cake - Turn the Screws, Sheep go to Heaven, Short Skirt Long Jacket
Primus - My Name is Mud
Coldplay - Clocks
The Pretenders - Brass in Pocket
Talking Heads - anything
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
Korn - anything they put out, put they did a fun remake of Word Up.
Marilyn Manson - anything he puts out, but Mobscene, The new sh*t is good.
Sublime - Santeria

Suggestions for avoiding...new Aerosmith and new Elton!
SMan
I listen to Long Cold Winter regularly. Slippery When Wet/New Jersey-era Bon Jovi I could listen to all day. Same with Poison's first two or three CDs. "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is one of my karaoke favorites.
Naomi
Heather, I love Korn's version of Word Up! laugh.gif

Gosh, and I thought I had eccentric taste in music. You guys are great! wub.gif

Here's some new stuff that's pretty good.....

Best Of You - Foo Fighters
Blue Orchid - The White Stripes
Beverly Hills - Weezer
American Baby - Dave Matthews Band
Naomi
Oooh, new Foo Fighters! I didn't realize they had a new one out!

I really like the new Weezer!

The single is out now, the cd will be out in June. It will be a double disc. Dave Grohl says one disc will be all out rock and the other will be acoustic. I can't wait....the Foo Fighters are great !!!

It was a great show......the came out and played songs with each other. Dave ran around through the crowd and gave his guitar to a girl in the audiance. biggrin.gif

I love Dave too. He cracks me up. I especially love the accoustic version of Everlong from Howard Stern's show.

Dave's an "old school" headbanger, too. This makes him ok in my book. The guy went to high school in Alexandria, VA and was in the DC punk band Scream.

Yep, he's cool. Came out with a metal album last year under the name Probot. Voivod, Venom, Motorhead, others...represented by the respective throats. The vid for "Shake Your Blood" (Motorhead-Lemmy) was cool. Grohl goes off on drums while Lemmy, malignant cocoa puff on cheek and all, wails throughout.

Okay, I must be regressing in my musical taste...either that or the Backstreet Boys are better then they used to be. I heard their new single "Incomplete" and I actually LIKE it! I really wanted to hate it, but couldn't!

I guess they've grown up, but they need to change their name (Backstreet Men?) dry.gif

I totally agree! The first couple times I heard it I had no idea it was the Backstreet Boys, thank goodness they've finally "grown up"!

The new Audioslave album, "Out of Exile" is awsome !!! Has anyone else heard it yet???

Another new album that is really good is "Karma and Effect" by Seether.

Check them both out....
SMan
The last Seether album was ok, but I'm getting burned out on "heroin-angst" songs like the ones that seemed to fill their last album.
YeomanWeller
I know what you mean.....it's not as 'angsty' as the last one.
YeomanWeller
The White Stripes........Get Behind Me Satan.......VERY different.....VERY good !!!
Naomi
I've been listening to the new Papa Roach cd...Getting Away with Murder. It's good... I love the song "Scars" cool.gif
