Here is one of our upstanding citizens running for office

HAGERSTOWN - One of the names appearing on next Tuesday's City of Hagerstown primary election ballot is Charlie Baker, but the Republican mayoral candidate's given name is Roger Dean Weber.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, Weber said he began using the name Charlie Baker when he began using the Internet.

Weber said he began using the name "probably in the early 80s when I first went on AOL (America Online). It seemed everyone was using an anonymous name, and I just chose Charlie Baker."

Weber said, "I've been using that (name) since, in one context or another. ... I use it all the time for everything."

Weber admitted to having past run-ins with the law, including serving prison time, but he did not respond to specific questions asking if he is the man who served a prison sentence in Michigan.

Local election officials said Tuesday that Weber, aka Baker, has met requirements both as a voter and to run as a candidate.

Criminal history

In an interview last week, Weber said he was arrested in the late 1960s and served federal prison time after being caught carrying marijuana into the country via the Mexican border.

According to Michigan prison records, a Roger Dean Weber with the same date of birth provided to local officials under the name Charlie Baker was convicted in 1978 of assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to serve between 14 months and four years in prison.

The man named Roger Dean Weber in the Michigan system also was convicted in 1981 of prison escape

AND HERES THE KICKER>>>>>>>>>>

In the phone interview from his Hagerstown home, Weber, aka Baker, said he does not recall having been in prison in Michigan between December 1978 and April 1985, the dates shown by Michigan records.

"It's too long ago for me to remember definitively anything that would be relevant to our conversation," Weber said.

Weber did not answer repeated questions asking if he was the same Weber who served prison time in Michigan.

Alright this is a guy that can't recall 7 years of his life!!!! If I was in the pen for 7 years I think I might be able to recall that even 20 years later!! I think he might have lost his long term memory smoking that mexican weed he was smuggling into the country biggrin.gif

With quality candidates like this I am surprised that there isn't a 100% voter turnout. Who wouldn't want this guy to be making decisions for us? laugh.gif
Yossarian
When I read this in the morning paper, my first impression-- was WTF???

Can't remember if he was in prison for 7 years????

Isn't prison escape, a felony? maybe not, but I thought it was.

I didn't think a convicted felon could run for public office.

Yup, Samy, a quality candidate. Alias and all. sad.gif
Naomi
ohmy.gif Unbelievable!

Considering all the information I have to give about myself just to get a job in local government, I can't believe this guy is allowed to run for office!

What I'd like to know is how it took this long for anyone to figure this out.
I can only guess that someone he's running against dug up this info on him.
If so thats the person I'd vote for. Not the dope smuggler who cant remember what he was doing for 7 years but the sneaky SOB who was smart enough
to start looking into opponents backgrounds laugh.gif

I remember a thread about Marion Barry getting elected to city coucilman and people here couldn't believe how people in DC would vote for him. Well now
Washington county can elect its own felon to office

Hi Everyone

I honestly don't believe that it was anyone running for Mayor dug up his background. Just from a candidates perspective he hasn't even been a blip on the screen.

Trump has more special interest money than God so he isn't worried about someone no one has heard of. Bruchey is more interested in returning us to the past . My self I didn't know a damn thing about the guy other than seeing he filed and I am more interested in knocking off Trump and Bruchey.

No one ever said politics was boring. I just wonder when they will run the story that Dick Trump doesn't come up with his own ideas?

Sincerely
Tony Campello

With all due respect, careful Tony. I think you have the respect of many people here. Opponent bashing (mud-slinging) doesn't look well on you. Please continue to discuss your plans for Hagerstown, and how your opponents plans won't work. But in my very humble opinion, mud-slinging serves no useful purpose, no matter how good it feels! wink.gif

This "Baker" sounds like a nut and/or sleezeball. Doesn’t remember if he was in jail or not? Gimme a break. rolleyes.gif Hopefully he is trounced and denounced as soundly as the Rev. Troublemaker. They sound awfully similar in style.

Hi Everyone

First you are right Yossarian. I do not need to mud sling I didn't realize till today at how effective my campaign has become.

For those who don't know the candidates for Mayor participated in 2 forums today that went very well for myself and others. But I actually had slate supporters attack my positions which only served to cause me to want to represent everyone even more. What made it an eye opener is that I don't have the campaign funds to compete ad for ad with the slate and yet I am a threat so it must be my message.

Tonight was a fun time most of the candidates for Mayor and Council were there and it provided good lively debate and discussion. I think everyone who attended came out better understanding what the issues are and who sincerely had plans for the future.

Samy0 that is a funny one it certainly made me chuckle.

Sorry for putting this all in one message but my girlfriend is having some surgery and I must be down in Virginia early tomorrow.

Good Night..

I read this as well, and I began pondering... maybe I should run as well. I'll go for the youngest mayor in Maryland???

Unfortunately, I'm stuck "Halfway" between two cities making myself qualified as incompetent to run for any mayoral positions.

Heard this "Baker" guy interviewed last night on, of all places, WQCM radio. This guy is a snake, IMO. He's digging himself deeper all the time.
samy0
This guys campaign has to be over at this point right? Why wouldn't he just creep away and never be heard from again? Nobody except his wife and mother would vote for him now

Apparently, tiger was right. There's a story in the paper by Gregory T. Simmons this AM's paper saying that Charlie Baker lives in a trailer park in Falling Waters, WV. What a con man, in more ways than one.

This huy is great! Can't remember if he was in jail and now it seems he can't remember where he lives or for how long he's been there laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
CommuterMike
The city has to be embarrassed that this guy is even on the ballot. I pray that they change the registration requirements for the next go-around.
Snoopy
The registration requirements seem such that you could probably register a squirrel to vote and run for office (-- and he'd probably beat Baker!) laugh.gif
Yossarian
I think most of the candidates are squirrels. laugh.gif
BMIC
Oh cool! I think I'll join in.... Write in "BMIC" for Mayor! That's the name I use on the internet so it's the name everyone knows me by... and I don't live in the City either.

Hope I win! wink.gif
Observer
And you wonder why companies of any substance don't relocate here or why the wages here are so low? I just saw this story on CNN and the report made Hagerstown look like Mayberry, NC. How sad to be portayed as a bunch of yokels.

Even sadder to BE a bunch of yokels!! laugh.gif

Sad to say, Mr. "Baker" seems well-suited to continue the Hagerstown mayoral tradition. Remember, back in the 1980s H-town's mayor disappeared (prompting national news coverage), and then it was discovered that he had checked into a mental hospital.

Sorry Tony -- you, Bruchey and Trump are far too sane for the job.

And that does raise a question: Given the lousy pay and non-stop criticism from the public and the press, would anyone in his/her right mind really want to be the mayor of a decent-sized town or city?
