I recently saw "Crimes of the Heart" at Potomac Playmakers and was extremely impressed with the acting. The performers did an excellent job! I was, however deeply disturbed by the fact that the Lord's name was used in vain, not once, but many times! There is NEVER any need to take the Lord's name in vain under any circumstances. Plus the fact, this is "Community" theatre. A place where families should be able to come to and not have to cover their children's ears. I have been told by a current board member that this would never happen. What has changed? How sad!

Maybe you need to stick with the Fresh Fire performances with Pastor Griejack. dry.gif

Idiot
I never saw the play but if I recall correctly in the movie one of the sisters was a victim of spousal abuse, killed her husband, and was trying to commit suicide, once by sticking her head in the oven. The fact that it's a comedy/drama and often people are laughing throughout some of those parts could be very confusing to a child. Personally I would be more concerned about that. But that's just me.

I believe the movie was rated PG-13 so I would expect the play to be about the same rating.

This is the disturbing part.

Honey, it's theater. It's art. If you don't like it, don't go there. To try to keep them from saying that word is wrong. Maybe you should suggest they provide a rating or warning instead.

What exactly did this new member do to deserve being treated with derision and rudeness by a few folks? Is this how we expect to draw new folks into the dialog? If you wanna disagree, can't you at least do it nicely when it involves someone who has been nice so far, has no history of attacking anyone here, and is a new member to boot? Biggins' link is dead -- at least for me -- but I assume it wasn't a smiley face.

Yes, you're absolutely right Snoopy.

I was applying Darwinism way too early.

I would definitely encourage anyone who goes a play to do a little research first, especially if you aren't familiar with it. It won't help with the dialogue itself, but at least you will know the general theme going in, and whether it would be suitable for kids. And if the review/blurb in the paper is too vague, you can always ask whether the show is family friendly when you order tickets. There is usually a contact number somewhere in the listing.

I know when my daughter was in Gypsy at the Playhouse last summer, the stripper scene, which was hilarious, would definitely not be for kids, and would have made many a sailor blush.

Community theater doesn't neccessarily mean it is geared for the community as a whole, but rather that it is put on by local (volunteer) talent from within our community, to advance their own skills and develop depth of creativity and foster a spirit for the arts, no matter how bold.

Excellent comments.

I, too, saw Crimes of the Heart. Just my 2 cents: Thought it was an awesome community production, the acting was great. I really enjoyed it, and it reminded me that I need to see more live productions in the future. All in all, two thumbs up!

These days, if you don't want to hear the Lord's name taken in vain, you may as well just not leave the house. And for that matter, don't turn that TV on, either. There's just no escaping it and plenty of other foul language these days. Anyone who's ever watched any of the old TV shows on Nick at Night surely sees the contrast. Our society's standards have changed drastically over the past few decades.

I get all sorts of grief just for espousing traditional standards of CONDUCT - forget about language!

Almost all Americans probably takes the Lord's name in vain, therefore I would think that the play is more of a real reflection on our society.

Which of course is the same argument Hollywood uses for all of the foul language and much of the general low-life behavior of characters in their movies. I think the word for it is "gritty realism". Of course the problem with it is that not everyone lives in the ghettoes where such a high degree of foul language and behavior is the norm, most of us by choice. The times once were such that TV and the movies attempted to cater to and portrayed more of what they thought was civilized behavior. Nowadays, the major studios all seems to be trying to outdo each other in vulgarity and shocking behavior.

Reasonable minds may differ, but I think the overall result has been that those of us who would try to keep our families' language and behavior a bit cleaner than average are fighting a losing battle. Consider that we'll often rightly punish a kid for using the same kind of language in the classroom that (s)he hears every evening from the television.

You have Ron Jeremy described very accurately ! And yes, somebody actually did hold a gun to my head on the selection of my avatar. I'm working on making him change it to something that better suits me ! But, HE ISN'T COOPERATING ! wink.gif
