Motorcyclists ride for Humane Society

Cool.
Heather
Very cool.

I'll have to get someone that has a bike to take me next time.

Do you participate in Canines on the Canal, Mstubble? A bunch of us here were supposed to go last year, but I think me and Peacefrog were the only ones that showed.
BMIC
Great. A bunch of friggin' Vegan bikers. rolleyes.gif

I hope none of them are wearing leather. Those animal rights activists will have a cow! tongue.gif

huh.gif

They rode for the Humane Society...Not PETA!
peacefrog
Actually... technically speaking... the Humane Society is considered an animal rights group. They definitely promote vegetarianism... though I suspect most supporters are not vegetarians. wink.gif

They actually have a lot of the same core values as PETA... they're just not as militant and crazy about it.

No, I've never made it.

Everything and everybody is a sterotype to you. You need to ease up a little. You assume way too much.
Heather
ohmy.gif Two frogs just posted back to back.

Actually, I don't buy leather, wool or silk products. It's my way of supporting what I believe in. Many would say that is overboard and equate me with PETA, but I disagree. I'm a quiet, modest supporter unless provoked, then I can get loud and teary eyed for my little creatures.

I would never hurt anyone for wearing these products, but if I stumbled onto someone's inhumane traps, I'd set them off. Now if I stumbled onto someone in the process of hurting an animal for no apparent reason, then I might jump on them and scratch their eyes out.

The difference, for me, lies in unecessary suffering and cruelty. To shoot an animal in the head is quick and as painless as possible. To beat it or have it die slowly is where I have a problem.

Well said. Kind of like PETA in disguise.

Legitimized PETA, in that a lot of governments support them by letting them run their animal shelters, which I vehemently oppose because doing so forces taxpayers to support a group whose views aren't REALLY all that different from those domestic terrorists, PETA.

I consider ALF the domestic terrorists. Invasion and destruction of personal property is, IMHO, not acceptable.

I think the Humane Society's shelters serve a purpose... a necessary purpose in today's world. Until we, as human beings, learn to take responsibility for the creatures in our care, we're going to need some type of management for the stray animals in our midst.

And yes, I'm vegan.

No, I don't eat beef.
Or pork.
Or chicken.
Or fish.
Or milk.
Or eggs.
No, I don't wear fur.
Or leather.
Or silk.

Yes, I have a life.
No, I don't throw red paint on fur coats. wink.gif

But do I feel like cracking the skull of people who keep their dogs chained 24/7 to a four foot chain--no shelter or fresh water?

Hell, yes.

Who doesn't?

Without the local humane societies the police departments would be overwhelmed with calls about strays, dogs chained up, and other animal abuse reports. They also offer the spay/neuter and adoption programs. I feel they serve a great purpose in the community. JMO though.

Without the local humane societies . . .  I feel they serve a great purpose in the community.

You mean without the people who run the local animal shelters, no matter who they may be. It doesn't have to be the Human Society of the United States - which is an animal rights activist organization - who runs them. I'm not against animal shalters, I'm against radical animal rights organizations. I'd rather see our tax dollars supporting a more middle-of-the-road, or non-activist organization doing what is indeed a very essential public service.

Like I said, it's just my opinion.
Heather
A friend of mine said she once had a possum on her back porch and she called animal control, (in Berkeley County), and they said to hit on the head with a baseball bat. blink.gif Insert cliche redneck joke here.
Naomi
...and have it for dinner! laugh.gif

We've got Coyote roaming the suburban area where I work in Rockville. One employee watched one stalk a jogger on her lunch break the other day. DNR says their response is to liberalize hunting season. Animal Control won't do anything about them ... but we can shoot 'em if they get to be a nuisance... blink.gif

Maybe call the Leggett boys -- they have a way with coyotes from what I hear... laugh.gif

Heather, you are too much! laugh.gif

You won't wear leather, silk, or wool, but you love your steak! Hypocrite! laugh.gif

I guess that dead cow needs its hide even after it's on your plate?

Personally, I call it using all the parts and not being wasteful. Gimme my steak AND the leather jacket. I think of my wearing wool as sheep air conditioning for the poor little guys in the summer. cool.gif

I haven't eaten steak in over 5 years. In fact, I've always disliked steak; even before I stopped eating beef.

Is someone editing my posts to be funny again? biggrin.gif I don't understand where you got the idea that I love steak.

But while I'm replying...

I can appreciate the idea of not being wasteful and using all parts of an animal, but just killing the animals isn't my problem. My problem lies with factory farming and inhumane treatment.

Sorry, Heather. I thought back a ways we were talking about being carnivores, and you had mentioned liking steak. Hmmm... you turn 30 and the memory starts to go! wink.gif

Ah, I found it. You had gone to Longhorn, but you had cod. For some reason, I thought you were semi-veggie, but still indulged in steak every now and then. My bad!
