BMIC -- How do we know which Old Testament rules to follow anymore?
That's a tough one. Some would just toss out all of the rules, and others have come up with a variety of reasons for choosing some over others. But the thing is, we don't have 100% definite answers for many of them. When you can't be sure which represent outdated notions and which represent timeless standards of righteous conduct, I say you should think twice before violating any. Choose carefully which of them you are willing to violate. We know we're under Grace now, and forgiven just by asking, but we have to consider the impact on ourselves and our witness.
The Bible also says "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." (I Corinthians 10:23)
So one ought to consider that, even if it is okay to do something, what effect will it have on you or those whom you know. Some folks look on tattoos as typifying the criminal element (no offense, WVD). If you don't want to be viewed by some people as a criminal or at least as "that kind" of person, then you shouldn't get a tattoo. That's the clear New Testament message I'm getting.
