I think it is kind of cool. It is a learning process for programming and reasearch. Or a waste of tuition, but I think it is a good learning process :-)

It is infinitely easier to learn a complicated process if there is some interest in the objects you are putting together. This site is a good example of how some students (who most likely love movies) found a subject that was enjoyable to work with.
