Hello, all. It's apple sauce making time, and my preferred apple is an antique apple - Grimes Golden. I used to be able to get them at Tracey's Orchards in Greencastle, but the trees got old and they bulldozed them.

The Grimes Golden was originally from West Virginia, but you never know where they might turn up. Does anybody know where I might find some? With gas $3/gl, I really don't want to do a lot of driving around looking for them. dry.gif

Thanx in advance!

Here's a place that ships them.

$46/bushel. GG's are being picked now.

If it's not too far for you to drive, Pryor's Orchard in Thurmont (off Rt. 77) has them!

HMMMMMMM We're going to Fairfax on Saturday, Thurmont's not too far up 15 from Frederick as I recall...... Guess what I'll be doing this weekend?

Yoss, thanx for the lead, but I want at least 2 bushels, maybe 3. $46/bushel is a bit salty.

The only place I can find that sells the trees is Miller Nurseries; I've ordered 2. I'll have to go thru this fire drill for several more years, but once those bad boys start producing, I'll be in apple heaven.

Thanx, guys!

Idiot
Ivy Hill Farm on Rt 64 near Ringold used to have them. I haven't made apple sauce since the kids were little and I've noticed that they have cleared a lot of their trees in the last few years so I'm not sure they still do. I'd give them a call, I think they're in the book. You've got plenty of time though, I used to wait until October.

I bought a Victorio strainer at a yard sale 15 years ago. Have you ever heard of it? It's unbelievable for making apple sauce. Just wash them, quarter them, throw them in the hopper and crank. Skins and seeds come out on one side and sauce comes out the other.

Good luck.

Naomi, no I didn't make it. Hubby had a bug in a bad place, and it was a quick run down the road, didn't even stay for the whole party, and run back.

Idiot, yes, I got a Victorio strainer for Christmas last year, and it did a great job with the 'maters this year. I expect it will also be great for the apples if I ever get to them....
