This is a serious question and I'm not trying to be a smarta$$: What's the "facination" do you think, with celebreties? They're just ordinary people like us but, with acting jobs. They aren't any of the characters they play,so what makes them so great?

The crappy movies and the so-so actors of today make going to the movies a waste of time and money anymore. Pity. It seems writers can't/or don't have the ability to come up with original ideas anymore.

You know, WVD, I'd often wondered the same thing. My hubby is into celebrity gossip. (Go figure. You'd never guess it if you met him.) I, on the other hand, found it terribly boring. However, since moving a TV in front of the treadmill, I find myself watching the "Entertainment" channel more...

I'd say, in all seriousness, fascination with celebrities is multifold:

1. It's another example of the peons being fascinated with royalty, except we don't have royalty in the U.S., so movie stars is as close as it gets.

2. It's the original version of "reality TV" plus soap opera... who's dating who, who married who, who was arrested...

3. I think lowly people such as myself get a kind of superiority thing when we hear/read about celebrities. ("Oprah makes a gazillion dollars! If I were her, I'd give it all to the poor.")

4. Style: fashion, hair and makeup. I dress a lot better since watching more celebrity news.

5. For me, personally, I just like the whole escapism thing of movies. For 120 minutes I can lose myself in car chases, love scenes and hot men. Very hot men. Which brings me to...

6. Fantasy fodder. Yeah, we know they're not real, and it's all about lighting and makeup and good camera angles. But seeing Bruce Willis beat up some bad guys... or Vin Diesel beat up some bad guys... or Harrison Ford beat up some bad guys... Well, it kinda turns me on.

I just get the feeling that if men posted the names of all "hot" women they'd be looked at as sex-crazed creeps by women wondering why we can't look deeper than sex and consider acting ability and the ability of the actor to portray complex characters and intense emotions.

I see this as fair play considering the Hot or Not threads!

ETA: Besides... the gentlemen are more than welcome to post their favorite, drool-worthy celebrities, too. It's not like I give hubby a whack whenever he pauses the TV with the remote control on some bikini-clad babe.

I'm not really "facinated" with celebs, but I do enjoy looking at the hott ones!

Actually, I think I'm more interested in the music celebs. I admire those with musical talent, and it's even better if they're easy on the eyes!

I'll agree that the rail-thin women do nothing for me. Ya gotta have some curves, ladies! I'd take a slightly overweight lady over an underweight one any day. If she can speak with some degree of intelligence, have some morals, and not act as though you should bow before her, now that's sexy! One of my favorites ever (this dates me, huh?) is Jaclyn Smith. In terms of attractive women in Hollywood, I like 'em buff.... like Linda Hamilton in T2. Give me a woman with muscle, and I'll watch the movie every time. I watched Million Dollar Baby just to see Hillary Swank's body.

Overly muscled women just don't do it for me. Doesn't seem feminine to me. Soft is feminine. JMO...

Hubby says the same thing... Fortunately for him, my little body refuses to put on muscle.

And gray hair is sexy too! Think Richard Gere, George Clooney, Richard Dean Anderson. Please don't color it...go with it!

I read about that last night Heather! It amazes me how these people are allowed to get married, and treat marriage like it's some high school relationship, but others in this country aren't allowed to marry, to save the "sanctity of marriage". Just unbelievable.
