Why is that b1t3me? The questionable post is post number 2 in this thread. No ones talking about deleting the rest of it.
This isn't a free advertising forum.

oh ok i took it as they were going to lose the entire thread
Althought i don't see anything wromg with post # 2 i see it as an advertizment for Locks Of Love which is a good organization in my book, but i guess i could have used the pm to get the info i was looking for
ok on second look post #2 is an ad for the biz , i was wrong in this case , but maybe there should be a section for people to advertize their local small biz ?

If all that needs to be done is remove the advertising. Why was my entire thread removed and not just the mention of the webmasters name and business.

I don't have an official "mod" answer for that and I wasn't involved in any of those actions, but as a regular posting member, I would guess the whole thing was yanked because the entire thread content embodied that business, therefore the entire thread had to go. You couldn't really delete or edit certain things and leave the thread still comphrehendable.
In this post, Locks of Love should be the main topic. When the advertising is edited out, there will still be plenty of thread left to understand and appreciate, plus there will be nothing hanging to bait an unsuspecting poster to reply and boggle the whole mess up again. In your thread, people would have continued to ask what was going on, generating even more unwanted responses and activity on the offending pieces of advertising/information.

Out of curiosity... why don't we just create an "Advertise your business here" section of HM Forums?
I've seen it before on other forums. Tired of all the ads, the board owner creates one spot where folks can post their ads. That way the advertisers/spammers get to shoot their load, and regular folks can just skip over that section.

Doesn't it say in the disclaimer that posts here are the sole opinion of the poster and are in no way endorsed by the news paper, managment, advertisers, blah blah blah?

If we have an advertising section on the board, one can click on it or not; depending on if one is looking for a certain business. Just like any other thread on here, don't click it if you're not interested!

In that case... we'd need to remove the restaurant review threads. Or threads about local ISPs, phone companies, cable companies, etc. And possibly even threads about movies/video games. Even that game we played--I forget what it was called, something like "Name that little hole-in-the-wall store"--would have to be deleted.

I don't care if theres a thread for advertising.I'd more than likely skip it.
I was wondering if we could start some sort of thread for the recycling/bartering of things. You know,if you've got something that you don't want anymore you could give it to somebody or trade it for something else. Just a thought.
And I know about Hag. Freecyclers website. It was just a thought to begin with.

I, for one, was glad to hear about this business and bookmarked their Webpage.
Several years ago my sister announced that she was coming down here to visit me. What to do to entertaine her? There is a so-called spa in Hagerstown, so I called them and asked about scheduling a day at the spa for two sisters. What a nice way to spend a day of sisterly fun and reward her for teaching a bunch of third graders and getting all of them through the NCLB tests.
They totally blew me off, needed more upfront time for reservations, generally snotty - we don't need your money. It was disappointing.
So, I am glad to know about this business. Although my sister has declared that she never again will set foot in Hagerstown (unless I am on death's door or she has to help clean up the detritus of my life). I am keeping it in mind for the future, including rewarding me for achieving another birthday or losing that extra 10 pounds.
Mrs. WVdragonlady, you did a good thing.

My guess is this is your answer.
And my two cents is that many people are taking all of this way too seriously.
It seems that if we forum members are giving opinions, that is fine. But if we are making accusations, that may be viewed differently. So if we post that we don't like chili at the Wendys on such and such road.. that is fine, but if we say we found a rat in the chili at Wendys on such and such road, that is different. That is the only thing that I can think of that would make sense...

In my experience, most web forums and discussion lists draw the line at UNSOLICITED advertisements. If somebody asks for recommendations for restaurants, hair salons, or brothels, that's one thing, but when somebody just comes out and posts a link or phone number to their own or a close relative's business without being asked, that's properly called "spam" and usually rightly condemned.
Where you have problems is where it isn't clear whether one is really intending to post truly unsolicited information for a commercial purpose. Those gray areas are where people get all worked up and confused over what ought to be done.

I bookmarked that place in WV where you got your hair cut and am saving up for my birthday, which isn't for several months. I want the works and would do it in Hagerstown if I could find a place that would like to take my money. But as I mentioned before, the only local place I could find was totally snotty when I called them about a day at the spa for my sister when she visited.
I can understand the Herald Mail's prohibition on blatant advertising. After all, that is a vital part of their revenue. Frankly, the main reason I buy the Sunday edition is for the ads and the listing of local events. I don't give a bleep about anyone's political leanings; I just want to know what is going on in the area and people's opinions on good sources of services and recreational and educational activities.
I do appreciate hearing about the city council and other local affairs, although it depresses me. But I've not been complaining about advertising. I just hope that people will be allowed to provide information on the good stuff I'd like to know about, especially local organizations.

We'd need a good ref. Someone neutral. I hear Harrier Miers is free these days.
