.....that others think is stupid or a waste. This came to mind the other night when a family member was telling me how wise of an investment Longaberger baskets are.

For me, my most expensive weakness is a nice car. I love nice rides, am willing to pay for them, will probably have a car payment my whole life, and wash it no less than once a week. I've been that way since I could afford a real car.

My other expense that I get flak for is video games. I actually went to the mall last year at midnight to buy a game when it was first released. blink.gif I just love ( dry.gif ) when people tell me how busy they are and how they don't have time for silly things like games.

An honorable mention would go to dining out, though I've gotten that under control the last month or two.

I used to have a problem with buying DVDs. I had this mindset that it was easier to go to Target and buy it then it was to screw around with renting it. Netflix cured me of that problem and I've sold about half my DVDs on ebay. I still buy the box sets of tv shows that I really enjoy, but rarely movies.

I guess my point of this post is to point out that one man's treasure is another man's turd (and vice versa).

You are a turd. tongue.gif

I've never understood why people buy tv shows and movies. How many times are ya gonna watch it? Until you memorize it? Geeesh.

I waste my money on going out to eat, drinking, going to the movies, renting movies, make-up and books that I read and then pitch or sell. Oh, and stupid CDs that I later wonder what ever possessed me to buy them. Chumbawumba Tubthumper? What was I thinking?
SMan
Actually, the tv series I own I have watched multiple times. Some of them are that entertaining to me. I'd much rather watch a quality, repeat episode of The Shield or The Sopranos than The Amazing Fear Factor Apprentice Race 9. Plus, I enjoy lending them to friends to get them turned on to the shows.

I own the Moonlight DVDs (Season 1 & 2, the only ones released so far). Again... that's related to my Bruce Willis obsession.

For me, my list of "senseless" buys (in order):

1. Dining out (My biggest non-essential expenditure each month, easily.)

2. Magazines

3. Wine

4. Books (I keep a lot, but I resell, too.)

5. Shoes

6. Clothing

Looking over that list, I suddenly wonder: Why aren't I smarter/more well-read and better dressed?

Maybe because I spend too much time drunk. LOL

Our video game/movie expense category varies widely from month to month, depending on how many other social obligations we have to fulfill. But we generally stick to rentals, except for special titles, like Medal of Honor. And even then we usually resell.
WVDragonlady
I have this thing for cut glass(glasses, creamers, sugar bowls, etc.) and table and kitchen linens. blink.gif I can't help myself at fleamarkets and thrift stores.
Also, material. I have some "interresting" "vintage" pieces of material from the 60's and 70's.
I rarely wear makeup(cept for Halloween) so I don't have THAT problem.
Theres not any tv shows or movies that I think are worth buying.DH has that problem.
Now,jewelry..thats another topic. rolleyes.gif We're not talking high price here, just anything that catches this Dragon's eye and some vintage pieces are in there too.
I'm pretty good about spending money. It's the hubby who has the problem! laugh.gif

I'm big on magazines too. If I didn't have to stand in line at the stores, I wouldn't get a chance to be tempted. dry.gif

Me too. I pay my own tuition, mortgage, bills, entertainment, etc., so I have to be good about spending because I don't have a backing income.

I think it builds character and keeps me grounded when I deny myself things anyway. Can't let myself get spoiled now, can I? biggrin.gif

I'd say dining out is what I spend (waste) money on the most. My job has cured me somewhat though since my boss pays for my meals.

I too spend loads of cash on my PC "gaming fetish". My wife cannot understand why I pay 50 clams for a game I'm tired of after 2 months. I'd say in the past 3-4 years, I have spent over $1000 on total (Not counting the online subscription games like City of heros and Star Wars galaxies).

Lots of cash spent on U of M clothes and Detroit Lions stuff too!
Yossarian
I'm actually pretty tight with my money.

Home fixups.

I'm a sucker for tech, especially pc tech and pc games. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of F.E.A.R. and the new Quake. Went out to buy Serious Sam II tonite, but crappy Circuit City didn't have it yet.

I drive an eighteen year old car.

Mine's nine years old. You have me beat.

But I'm going to drive that baby until she dies... so who knows... maybe mine will one day be as geriatric as yours! tongue.gif

How many miles do you have on that car ???
Yossarian
About 82,000. My round trip to work was only 5 miles until recently. Now it's 20 miles round trip.

But I get slightly over 30mpg and it passes emissions inspection with flying colors.
momsapilot
We are really thrifty, but I'm a sucker for the clearance rack in the kid's section. She's a growing girl (unfortunately, so am I sad.gif ), so she has to have new clothes. However, I go to Act II to pick up things a lot.

Other than that, dining out has to be the biggest one (no appetizers or desserts!), especially now that I'm in school. With our insane activity schedule and my night classes, we never have a meal together. It would be strictly cold cuts because no one is home long enough to cook or grocery shop. I don't even have it together enough to load up the crock pot!

My car is 10 years old, with 89K, but the truck is 2001, bought used. The mortgage and other bills takes up most of the money.

My other weakness is travel. I have to get away every now and then, but it's usually for only 4 or 5 days with our schedules.

Flying used to be my big money drain ($120/hr) but the mortgage has pretty much ended my flying days sad.gif , at least until I finish school and get a real job!

Dear sister Heather, donate your books to the library!!!
Idiot
We dine out a lot but for me personally it's fishing tackle.

I know you're thinking "how much can a person spend on fishing tackle?"

You would be amazed. My wife always tells me that we could buy enough fish to feed a small village for a year with what I spend on tackle. laugh.gif
GMAN
My list is as follows
Guns
Bullets, powder, primers (I load my own)
Hunting Gismo's (example.. my GPS I've never got lost anywhere in my life)
fishing tackle & boats
that $5000.00 atv that does nothing but plow snow
new trucks ( I'm a sucker for a good looking truck )
wine 'n' & dine 'n' all for a POA (that was before I got married)
this list could go on forever. blink.gif
sheash
1. Daylilies
2. Other plants, perennials, annuals, seeds, etc.
3. Other things related to greenhouses or gardening
4. Neat little sit-arounds to put in the yard or garden
4. Food. We could be snowed in and eat well for quite a while
5. Alcohol: Beer, Rum, Tequila
6. the mortgage. We paid the mortgage down by more than $10K last year, and at the rate we're going, I can quit my high-stress job at the end of next year because we won't have a mortgage anymore.

We've got 3 Toyotas - an '86 p/up with 226K on it, a '96 p/up with 140K on it, and my '98 camry with 178K.

Don't wear makeup; I'm fat so why bother shopping for clothes; and have huge feet that I would prefer to have amputated than to shop for shoes. Every once in a while I see something that I just have to have for my grandsons, but that's usually related to the Redskins or the Orioles. I believe that I've been in a ToysRUs 3 times in the 2.75 years that I've been a gramma.

sheash-thats no excuse! you've seen my pics ain't ya? you're not alone. wink.gif that was at a picnic so I was in bibs. rolleyes.gif I've got lots a pretty clothes,I just don't wear them for some reason.

What ya gonna do with all that money when the morgage is paid?
We just refinanced this past week and we'll be done in 5yrs now and we're saving thousands on intrest.I've done told DH that we're starting a "Trip Account" at the bank so we can take some nice ones too. We both want to go to Texas and I've got a friend in NC thats buggin me to come down. I want to go to Mich. and Wis. and I'd loved to see N. Cal.
sheash
WVD, once I get this house paid off, I'm going to gather shopping carts from the parking lot at the WalMart, or make sandwiches at Sheetz. I'll even scrub johns, as long as I get some pay, health insurance, and don't have to deal with people. I figure I can make a sandwich, wrap it up, and bellow a number. And if the sandwich argues with me, I've got a knife!

So, I won't have "all that money" any more, but I will also be debt-free. I'll only be working 40 hours a week, and then can come home and play with my daylilies, whatever. I'll be able to spend time with my husband and family (something I don't get to do now), and free to do what I want.
WVDragonlady
Good on you sheash.
But, I wanna go for the glamour job at WM. Door greeter! laugh.gif laugh.gif
YA WANT A STICKER!? laugh.gif tongue.gif
