Computer CPR Clinic
Spyware, adware, viruses, and worms, Oh my! If you’ve ever felt helpless because of computer problems, come visit Hagerstown Community College’s Computer CPR Clinic at the Valley Mall on Saturday, November 5. Students from HCC’s Information Technology Association club will be providing consulting and repair services for home computer headaches.
On a donation basis, you can bring in your computer to the clinic between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM for a variety of services. Student technicians will help diagnose problems on your PC related to hardware, provide advice on upgrading your current computer with new hardware, or scan your computer for problematic issues such as viruses, adware, or spyware.
The Computer CPR Clinic service area will be located in the Valley Mall next to Antietam Cable which is providing high speed Internet service through MyACT.net. No pre-registration is required. For more information, e-mail Jack Drooger, Computer Training Coordinator, at droogerj@hagertowncc.edu or call 301-790-2800, ext. 453.

Is this advertising? Or not? Maybe someone owning a computer repair shop would think so. Maybe someone with little cash and a computer problem would think not.
What think the mods?

No Snoopy, I don't think so. More like a public service.

serious question: Why would someone drag their whole computer to the mall? unless it was a laptop?Do you know how many wires there are!?

Tony,
Can I bring in my laptop? I think my fan needs to be cleaned, but it may be something worse. Taking it to the mall would be easier than going to Best Buy and visiting the Geek Squad.

Oh, I see. Public service.
As for your suggestion, not likely.

But if questions of forum policy aren't allowed any longer ya can just say so. Or ban me. What recourse do I have?

HI Everyone
I did not realize this would cause so much debate. This is not someone looking to sell or make personal profit. The students at HCC have been doing this for a couple reasons:
1. It gives them experience in a supervised setting.
2. It does raise funds for the club to buy computer software called transenders that help them prepare for certification exams and to attend some lectures and seminars that they would not be able to attend otherwise.
3. It is a service to the public. I have been to a couple of these things and we have had elderly people who have brought their computers in and said they could not afford what the computer shops charge to get it working. For example I shop at a computer store in Virginia and witnessed the store charge $95 for installing Zone Alarm on an elderly couples computer. This was not a small shop either this was a nationally recognized chain. $95 for a piece of software they could have had for free and 5 minutes to install it.
As for people bringing their computers they only need to bring the tower or laptop. There are computer monitors and everything else needed already at the site.(You don't need the wires) If anyone needs help bringing it in one of the students will be able to help.
Both Antietam Cable and the Valley Mall have been very supportive in this. They realize this done by students for the benefit of students.
Thanks
Tony

Bring it in at least you will know if it that or something more serious. If it needs parts then you will end up going somewhere else. If it just needs cleaned out it should not be a problem.
I am probably not going to be there that day I have a new job and I am working on Saturday's. But I know most of the people who are going to be there and they are pretty good at what they do.

Hello Tony:
I missed the last repair clinic and was glad to hear about the next one on the 5th. I just called to confirm the obvious: of course, I only have to bring over the CPU. They will have keyboards and monitors to hook it up to test it.
Also, since I am no weight lifter, they also confirmed that a young strong student will be available to help me bring it in.
This will be very helpful to me and thanks for letting us know.

Hi Dirk
Like it or not anyone who is in IT now has to go for certs. In some cases it is even more important than a degree. All the test do is help the students prepare for test they are going to have to take if they really want to work in IT.
