QUOTE
The greatest challenge in the days to come is to keep the violent fringe from winning even wider sympathy. There are more than 12 million people of Muslim origin in Western Europe, roughly half of them in France. Many have adapted easily and well to European life. But constant tensions and deep resentments do remain, especially among those left behind in blighted communities that others managed to escape. In a report issued just days before the violence broke out, the French government counted 751 neighborhoods deemed "sensitive urban zones." Most of the people there have roots in Africa and Islam. Average unemployment is 21 percent, more than twice the national average, and rising. Among men under 25, the rate jumps to 36 percent. Disconnected from their past in the Muslim world and uncertain about their future in Europe, they've come to see themselves as citizens of nothing but "Neuf-trois," 93, the postal code for the outer edges of the Paris urban area.

Rest of the Story

Ten nights and counting this is getting out of hand.

This seems like a problem in other parts of Europe like Sweden and Denmark

Gee, I thought the French would be immune from Muslim hate. rolleyes.gif

I can't imagine that they don't know what to do. Surely they remember how to surrender! ohmy.gif laugh.gif

And here I thought France was such a utopian place... blink.gif

This has nothing to do with Muslium hate. It has to do with poverty and neglect of the lower class. Not that I condone or agree with what they are doing. But this is not the first time they have had problems such as this, just that it is worse this time.

The alienation and anger in these neighborhoods is not new. Riots broke out in the 1980s and 1990s, prompting new government programs supposed to bring hope to the projects. But as memories of the violence faded, so did funding. Outreach programs have been cut and neighborhood-based police have been pulled out. "We haven't paid attention for such a long time, there is a sense of abandonment," says French Sen. Dominique Voynet, who represents the main conflict zone.

These two paragraphs from the article sum the underlying cause up nicely. I imagine there comes a time when the poor feel as though they are forgotten and angers come to a head over a incident such as the 2 kids getting electrocuted and the peoples of the region rebel. Kind of like the LA riots and Rodney King. It is not right and in the long run will solve little if anything. But will bring some attention to the situation.

You mean those two kids that were hiding from the cops (not even being chased) and got fried trying to hide in a electrical substation? That's hardly a reason to riot. It's more like Darwin winning again.

If conditions are so bad there, why do they continue to immigrate to France?

Neglect in France? blink.gif They have more welfare-style support for people who do not work than almost any nation anywhere. If the Muslims or anyone else aren't happy there, where will they be happy? If they have an answer -- they should go there, and France should buy 'em a 1-way ticket there.

I couldn't tell you Sman. Just wanted to correct Snoopys statement. In a way he was correct it was anger predominently Muslim. He just maid it sound like it was Muslim anger directed at France as a whole in a terrorism sort of way. Rather than predominently Muslim anger directed at their situation of poverty and neglect by their communities. I agree no reason to riot. But the article said last time this happened the government stepped in with programs to help the needy and those programs have now been pushed aside or funding taken away.

I do not know much about the welfare systems of France but the unemployement rates in that article were pretty staggering. Maybe the people want jobs and not program support. Or, the article did state the old programs are going away maybe the government support is slipping and now inadequate.

Maybe France needs to tax the rich a little more then they can redistribute the money to those poor rioters.

Then again maybe that's the problem tax the rich too much and it hurts job creation and you end up with high unemployment.

I think France better get a handle on this and fast before more people die, only one killed so far.

This might help us out in Iraq some of the terrorist may go to France and help out in the jihad.
