Tomorrow (02/03/2006) is a big day for the Kama Sutra worm. It will overwrite files created by Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and PowerPoint, among other programs. This worm goes by many other names, including Blackworm, Grew, Nyxem, MyWife and Tearec.

The worm spreads via e-mail attachments or file shares. Once a system in is infected, it will try to infect all shared file systems it has access to. You may see a new "zip file" icon on your desktop.

The worm will disable most anti virus products and delete them. The worm will e-mail itself using a variety of extensions and file names. It will add itself to the list of auto-start programs in your registry.

Please be aware and suspicious of any e-mail attachments that you may receive from anyone for the next week.

Where I work dodged this worm so I feel very lucky. It seemed like mostly hype and it didn't really effect too many people nationwide. We got hit by a virus at the beginning of January that prevented people from logging onto their computers and spread through the network via shares so it was very nasty to get rid of and we had to check all 500+ computers for it.
