I found a dead hawk stuck on it's back in the top of a large tree either on my property or just across it in a neighbors! Does anyone know if theres any kind of law against killing them? Who would I call to find out? I don't know for sure HOW it died. It's all the way to the top of a large tree. I thought it was construction trash that maybe blew up there, but I got out the binoculars and it's a beautiful big hawk. It's so depressing. I thought I havn't heard the pair around lately. I just saw them a couple of days ago hunting in the field next to us and down at the farm at the lake. I'd like to slap the shit out of who ever did it if it was shot or something like that. I'm hoping it's not "the dreaded bird flu". We have a large amount of wild geese in the area where they live and hunt.And I thought I heard that they found it in wild geese some where. Any ideas as to who to call would be a big help.

I don't have a number for you to call, but you may want to take it to a vet tomorrow. They could test it to see why it died. And they may want to have it stuffed. I once had a beautiful barn owl fly right into my van in broad daylight. I have the van filled with little boys, at the time, so we rushed it to the vet. Sadly, it was DOA. But the vet said he wanted to have it stuffed. Such a beautiful bird. The vet was not sure why it was out flying around during the day. They can't see well in the sunlight.

Good luck with finding a number to call. If no one knows.... the vet may know this also.

Could be natural causes, but it is illegal to kill them for sure. If ti was shot, well, there are a few jerks behind guns like there are jerks behind the wheel of a car.

I sent an e-mail to the chief of law enforcement's office down in Charleston today. Have to wait for a reply.I finally found the local number for the DNR here.Right down the road. I'll call them tomorrow.

Just an observance of mine, BMIC regularly makes snide comments in response to WVD's posts. WVD usually (not always) ignore's B's posts, as she has him on ignore. However, he seems to take every possible opportunity to bash her, as he obviously holds some kind of grudge against her. I think she's finally had enough and chose to modify her sig.

I e-mailed the chief of DNR lawenforcement-still no reply,and I called the local DNR office just down the road and left a message and no one's called back. still waiting.

Still no e-mail reply but did get the call today. Since I don't how it died and if anyone DID shoot it, theres nothing to be done. And it's at the very top of a TALL tree. So,unless the top of the tree snaps off and we can get to the bird,theres no way to know how it died. this stinks. and what makes it awful is that I havn't seen or heard the other hawk around hunting or anything Man sure does screw up the Mother's plans!

Finally got a reply from the main office in Charleston. They said basically the same thing as the local office only they did say that ALL birds of prey are protected under state and federal laws against being killed. If for some reason I can recover the body then I'm to call the local office.
