Anybody here on the board have a pet rabbit? I saved one from being put in a crusher on Sat. and I have no idea what I'm doing here blink.gif ! I bought a little book "Your first rabbit". and it's fine to get you started but,I'm looking for some insight as to how to keep it happy and healthy. We were at a tractor store and they had some rabbits for sale. We were out side measuring something to buy and one of the young guys asked us if we wanted a free rabbit because the manager was going to get rid of it because he didn't want to have to clean it. Apparently somehow it had a ball of food and droppings attached to it's fur between it's hind legs and on it's tummy. We took it and I soaked it in a basin of warm water and got alot of the stuff off. Theres still some on it's tummy and a little left between it's legs yet,but I'm working on it. Hubby thinks that it might have happened in transport(what ever that means). It's so skinny you can feel it's bones sticking thru. It ate up a storm of special grass that you give them and some pellet food. Hubby made it a nice box to sleep in and we have it in a big cage we bought for it.It was very active today and was looking all around and hopping every where. It's eyes are nice and clear. It doesn't have a runny nose and it's not sneezing. And it's dropping are fine. Maybe it was just the runt and didn't get it's fair share. All the others were quite happy and robust looking. I have no idea how to tell if it's a male or female so I called it Lucky. Original, huh? rolleyes.gif It's so tiny it fits in my hand. So cute and soft and shiny black. OK. ANY help will be appreciated. I'll take some pics and load them at the other place wink.gif biggrin.gif

Aww, the poor thing! Well, it sure is Lucky that you were at the store at the right time (pun intended!)

I've never had a rabbit myself, but some of my friends have. They've had them litter box trained and everything! One of my friends would even walk hers on a little leash! It sounds like you're doing everything right for it, feeding and keeping it clean & happy.

Unfortunately, with Easter coming up these stores get rabbits in to sell and parents buy them for their little kids. A few months later they're turning them in to the local humane societies because they don't want the trouble of taking care of them. mad.gif

Can't wait to see the pics

WVD, as with any pet, TLC is key. I would also recommend a trip to your local Vet. Rabbits like other critters, need check ups and routine shots. Enjoy, and thank you for saving the little tyke. The Vet will be able to tell you the gender of your new pet also.

Dragonlady,
I raised rabbit's, guenia pig's, and hampster. Your doing fine, keep a check on his nose & eye's make sure threr is No discharge like yellow or green, if this does happen take he/she to the Vet's that's the signs of an upper respitory infection which can be treated with antibotics ( sorry i spelled that wrong) keep him/her warm you might want to put a light bulb over the top of cage this will not only keep him/her warm if he has a slight cold it will dry it up, don't use nothing stronger than a 40 watt, and trun it off at night so it can sleep. If she isn't eating well get her Timothy Hay they love it, but don't feed it to her as a meal get stright green pellets. Dragonlady when holding her feel her lungs to make sure she isn't weezing..Good Luck with Lucky, i'm sorry if i spelled wrong i'm just trying to help, I LOVE animals. Oh don't feed her any raw vegies yet she is to young it will give her the poops.

Thanks guys. It has the hay and the pellets too and fresh water in it's bottle. It just LOVES it's box! When it wants Sun it comes out and sits in it. We have it just in front of the bay windows for now, until it gets too warm for it. I'm figuring that it's still too young to try to litter train it,so I'll wait for a few weeks more before starting that. I'm thinking that I'll have to get to the Library for some more books and info. wink.gif biggrin.gif

I had many rabbits as pets as a kid. Never had one in my stew, but I hear they're good that way too. smile.gif

Dragonlady,
It's not to young get it a ferret litter box, buy some order free and cheap kitty litter, put a little bit at the bottom, make sure it's in the corner of the cage, he/she will use it, they mainly just pee in it but that is good because there pee is what smells so get one and try it, I have a few here if you want one...
Have fun with Lucky..................

Speaking of animal's all my life I have wanted an African Gray, when my Husband and I got married every week end we would go to Fredrick at Rick's Pet Store, he had a Gray name Bill. I loved that bird he was so cool, I never looked around I hung out with Bill. One week end we went down Rick took Bill home sometimes with him, Rick was in a wreak and Bill got killed. That is my Dream an African Gray. I hope one day I can get one...............

I remember Bill, he was awesome! But actually Bill was killed when someone drove their car into the front of the store. It was really awful because Bill's perch sat right by the front window.

Okay, back to Lucky the Bunny!

I've never had a bunny, but I can't tell you how many times I've heard about somebody putting their bunny in its pen outside, thinking it was safe, and a dog getting it. Based on that, I'd say that you shouldn't leave your bunny outside unsupervised, even if it is in a cage!

WVD,
I hope you don`t have any bad hairrrr days biggrin.gif
Good luck with the little guy or gal??

I had a pet rabbit that was litter box trained, but eventually we gave it away because it kept chewing on electric cords.
If you get a wire bottom cage, be sure to put a board in there; rabbits' feet get sore if they have to stay on wire.
You need to get good advice on diet. They have special nutritional needs which includes hay or timothy. I am sure the pet stores as well as the library have books on raising rabbits.

Looked like dinner to me. huh.gif

Bumping it to start my day out right. I want good karma. SO it is Bunnies and a nice story.
Heck, a neat family too. As a former bunny owner I enjoyed the story and picture. Thanks Steve S, Chief, and Patton for chatting w/ me yesterday about bunnies. Of course some had interesting perspectives.smile.gif cool.gif

Trained pet rabbit free to roam home.
According to the article, the family has a cute and smart rabbit. Our family had a rabbit for years, fond memory of ole Ozwald. I enjoyed this story. Cole, the rabbit in the story, is litter box trained. How cool. He still has some issues like my rabbit did, but he looks sweet.

_ As rabbits go, Joyce's pet, Cole, looks like your typical rabbit. On closer inspection, though, Cole isn't exactly typical. The Shives family adopted the black Polish rabbit in October 2004 after their oldest son, Steve, now 27, got Cole from a friend whose landlord said the 6-month-old rabbit had to go.

Steve thanks for sharing, it is a cute story. A very happy ending for little Cole.
